Donald Trump on Tuesday was federally charged with attempting to overturn the 2020 election, with him accused of attacking the 'bedrock' of US democracy.

Trump, 77, has been indicted on four charges: conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

He was indicted alone, but six co-conspirators are referenced. The six are accused of helping Trump with his scheme to cling to power, but they are not charged.

Trump will appear before a judge in Washington DC on Thursday to be arraigned. His campaign said the indictment was part of an attempt to stop him from reclaiming the White House in 2024.
