Interior design influencer Tay BeepBoop faces bitter backlash after accusing fellow TikTok star of 'copying' her quirky 'squiggle' decor - as controversy prompts wallpaper company to AXE her collection

An interior design influencer has been suddenly dropped by a high-end wallpaper company amid furious backlash over a video she posted in which she accused another popular creator of copying her aesthetic on a regular basis.

Tay BeepBoop, who currently lives in San Francisco, took to TikTok last week with a now-deleted video claiming that 26-year-old Kaarin Joy ripped off several of her own, original DIY project ideas.

The video was met with furious criticism from followers - who slammed the DIY decorator for her 'cruel' takedown of Kaarin. In the midst of the ensuing backlash against Tay, high-end wallpaper brand Otto then axed a line of peel-and-stick designs created in collaboration with her.

'I'm about to be so petty and I've never done something like this before,' Tay began in her original call-out montage.

'But there is a large creator who - it's just getting out of hand,' she continued as she claimed Kaarin was knocking off her concepts.

Tay went on to highlight how a number of Kaarin's design projects did in fact appear similar to her own past endeavors.

One was her 'mossy mirror' - a full-length mirror that Tay had restored using fake moss to cover up cracks in the glass.

Months later, Kaarin began documenting the process of creating a very similar-looking full-length mirror that she'd built from scratch rather than restored.

As another example, Tay brought up the curvy, green 'squiggle' she'd painted alongside her staircase to serve as a visual anchor for a makeshift 'art gallery' to house her boyfriend's 'realistic and beautiful' monster-head sculptures.

Tay then ran a clip of Kaarin creating a near-identical motif on an overhang in her kitchen, on which she displayed a series of fake bowls of cereal.

Yet another design element Tay took issue with that is prominently featured across Kaarin's content is the latter's 'dinosaur-head wall' - which Tay perceived as being suspiciously similar to her boyfriend's sculptures.

Less convincing was Tay's argument that Kaarin, in painting her kitchen, had knocked off the green and blue color scheme Tay had chosen for her bedroom.

'So that's just another weird coincidence,' added Tay sarcastically.

Oddly, Tay also seemed to take issue with the fact that Kaarin had bought and used a cake-patterned wallpaper design from Tay's own line

She also railed against the flamboyant design scheme of Kaarin's office - featuring a cake-pattern wallpaper print from Tay's own home décor line as well as an orange couch.

'That orange couch is literally the knock-off of my orange couch,' she noted.

'I also created a gradient room, where my whole room is gradients,' Tay continued. 'And then [Kaarin] decided to make an ombré room. Strange coincidence!'

Tay also explained that she'd privately contacted Kaarin asking her to 'Please stop copying me' - and implied Kaarin hadn't been that apologetic or seemed sincere in curbing the resemblance to Tay's aesthetic in her future projects.

A couple of days after Tay shared the video, Kaarin released a teary-eyed video in response to her accusations.

'I haven't seen this video because she posted it and then blocked me. So I don't really know what's being said about me. But I know I'm getting a lot of really mean and hateful comments and messages now,' she began.

Kaarin went on to elaborate that she was 'really disappointed because I really, genuinely like this creator, and she was one of the first people I followed on here that I was really like, "Wow, this décor style is so cool. It is so colorful and so fun."

'And just really encouraged me to actually express myself,' she continued of Tay's influence on her own DIY-design tastes.

'I will say we have very similar styles… I'm so inspired by her, and I think it's so crazy to say that no one else can decorate in color or have similar colors to you. And it automatically being me, maliciously copying her.'

In a video response, Kaarin expressed that she was 'disappointed' about Tay's accusations given that she had 'really liked' her

Of the matching green squiggles, Kaarin admitted, 'I have lots of squiggles in my home. That was inspired from her, I absolutely loved it.'

Kaarin also made a salient counterpoint in questioning the logic of a DIY influencer using their platform to accuse others of copying them.

'If you're branding yourself as a DIY channel - "Do this yourself. Here's how I did it. Here's the links for the supplies" - and then to say, no one can be inspired off of you, is just wrong.'

She emphasized, 'Our whole platform is encouraging other people to do the same thing.'

Kaarin's fans poured into the comments section to voice their support.

'A huge part of art is inspiration. All artists take inspiration from somewhere, something, or someone. You are someone I really enjoy watching Kaarin!' one wrote.

Another exclaimed, 'I've copied countless DIY projects it brings joy being able to recreate something I don't think it’s a bad thing.'

Following Kaarin's retort, the tide of opinion rapidly turned against Tay - prompting the latter to issue a TikTok apology video nearly a week after she'd initially leveled the copycat-accusations against Kaarin.

'I'm grateful for some of the hate and the criticism that I've gotten because it's helped to give me the perspective and understanding that I clearly needed, cause I did not understand,' she said in part.

'Everyone draws inspiration from somewhere, and the fact that I went after someone who has been nothing but nice to me, and has done nothing to deserve what I did, just proves how much I got this wrong,' she continued.

TikTok's DIY interior-design community did not seem satisfied with the response as they continued to poke fun at Tay.

'So glad you helped me discover Kaarin. Cos I love her home and decor,' one snapped.

'Her profile pic is giving Sour by Olivia Rodrigo. I hope she credited her,' hissed another of Tay's TikTok profile image.

A third chimed in, 'Can I paint my room blue and green or do I need permission from u??'''

Shortly before the video was posted, it was revealed that Tay's wallpaper collaboration with interiors company Otto had removed the designs from its website - with the brand later issuing a statement condemning her behavior.

'As a small business, we strive to support and uplift artist, creators, and DIYers,' the statement read. 'We are disappointed in and do not stand behind the video that was posted by Tay BeepBoop regarding Kaarin Joy earlier this week.

'It goes against our values and the ethos of the DIY community.

'As such, effective immediately, the Tay BeepBoop collections will no longer be available for purchase.'
