A recent TikTok is giving New Yorkers a reason to be cautious when walking on the city's crumbling sidewalks, and an insight into what's lurking just inches underneath their feet.
Content creator Casey Neistat, 42, posted a 20-second video of how dangerous the world below a New York City street can be.
Stepping on a decaying part of the sidewalk, he gives the rubble a nudge and it instantly collapses, revealing a whole world of rocks and old, rusty pipes dripping with water.
One TikTok user referred to that specific spot as: 'A lawsuit calling someone's name.'
Many commenters also discussed the dangers - but some pointed out the potential 'benefits' of sidewalks falling apart without warning.
Casey Neistat is known for his TikToks. He's posted several videos in New York City, and currently has more than 774,000 followers
Casey Neistat's TikTok has gained more than 17 million views and counting since posting the clip on September 12
People on TikTok have voiced their opinions on the video - many pointing out the dangers and potential 'benefits' from possible injury
One commented: 'Bro out here wasting injury lawsuits.'
Others were quick to agree - one of them being a lawyer from Australia.
'Aussie insurance lawyer here: that would make someone a millionaire in any other country,' he said.
Another stated: 'I would of fell in there and sued for a trillion.'
Some commenters even suggested that Casey be the one to fall beneath the sidewalk and see what comes of his injuries.
One person said: 'ahhh man should've took the step and got paid.'
Suing the city of New York is not as easy as TikTok users might expect, however, and could even prove impossible without the proper proof.
According to Rosenbaum and Rosenbaum PC, a sidewalk accident victim must prove that those responsible for the maintenance of the sidewalk must either have or should have known that a dangerous condition existed.
Many people on TikTok have left comments describing the area and have mentioned that falling through the sidewalk hole could give someone a serious payday
This TikTok was posted only one month after a sidewalk near Spring Street subway station in Soho started crumbling.
Several pieces of concrete were discovered to be loose enough to fall onto the subway platform - however, the subway stayed open despite the worrying issue above.
New Yorkers were quick to voice their opinions once the news of this issue came out, with one telling NY1: 'I would be worried about somebody falling into it.'
Although the damage did not appear as severe as the Soho incident in Casey's TikTok, there is cause for concern.
Rusty pipes and dripping water were only part of the underground world of a New York City sidewalk. It also showed an incredible amount of dirt and concrete that may be unstable
If a subway station were to be underneath the sidewalk, the debris Casey stepped on would likely fall onto the platform.
Thankfully, there was nothing - but TikTokers did notice a sound below the sidewalk that resembles what someone would hear at a supermarket.
One person asked: 'Why does it sound like a grocery store in there tho? Who's scanning groceries in that hole.'
Another person said: 'I work at a grocery store and it sounded exactly like our alarm for a low temp freezer/cooler. though I was hearing things for a min lol.'
