Acting Temple University president JoAnne Epps dies after collapsing

JoAnne A. Epps, the Acting Temple University president, passed away at the age of 72 after collapsing on stage during a memorial service for Charles L. Blockson. She was transported to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she was pronounced dead around 3.15 pm. 

Acting President JoAnne A. Epps' passing was confirmed by Temple University in a statement expressing deep sadness and condolences. Temple's board chairman, Mitchell Morgan, described her as a devoted servant and friend who represented the best of the university. There is no information suggesting that President Epps had any health issues prior to her sudden collapse. 

Temple University Provost Gregory Mandel described JoAnne A. Epps as a compassionate and caring individual during a press conference where he and others expressed deep grief over her passing. The university's Board of Trustees is set to meet to plan for the transition following her sudden death. The memorial event for Charles L. Blockson, who passed away in June, resumed after the temporary suspension due to Epps' collapse, with another individual reading her remarks.

JoAnne A. Epps assumed the role of acting president at Temple University in April, succeeding Jason Wingard, who resigned in March. Wingard had served as the university's president since July 2021 but resigned amid a spike in campus violence. Epps took over following the tragic shooting death of Temple University officer Christopher Fitzgerald in February, which occurred during a pursuit of individuals linked to a series of robberies in the area. 

JoAnne A. Epps had a long history with Temple University, starting at the bookstore 40 years ago. During her time as acting president, she focused on addressing enrollment and safety issues, aiming to bring stability to the university. Despite her temporary role, she was deeply connected to Temple University and expressed her love for the institution. The Temple Association of University Professionals labor union remembered Epps for her dedication.
