Horror fans have voiced their elation after it was confirmed that popular scary movie It Follows will be getting a sequel.

The 2014 film was written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and stars Maika Monroe as the lead role of Jay Height.

A modern twist on the horror genre, the movie sees Jay become haunted by a supernatural being after she has sex with her new boyfriend.

She learns that the being, 'it', is unseen by most people and all she can do to stay alive is have sex with a new person and 'pass it on', if she doesn't, the being will kill her and move up the chain to the person who passed 'it' on to her.

The film received critical acclaim, garnering an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $23.3 million worldwide.

One person wrote: 'It Follows is still one of the best horror films of all time so the fact that we're getting a sequel with David Robert Mitchell writing/directing again and Maika Monroe reprising her role is so incredibly exciting'.

Another echoed: 'it follows was the blueprint for like 75% of prestige horror movies since 2014 so a lot of girls should be scared for the sequel. REAL horror is back idk'.

A third added: 'It Follows was a masterpiece. If you haven't seen it yet, you should take the time to watch it.'

While a fourth said: 'The smile on my face is unreal. This is legit one of my favourite movies ever. Can't f ing wait.'

A sixth praised: 'Good to hear David Robert Mitchell is gracing us with another horror masterpiece! IT FOLLOWS was a modern classic indeed.

'They say good things come to those who wait... I sure hope THEY FOLLOW is worth the suspense. Let the nail-biting begin!'

Another agreed, writing: 'Oh man, what a great surprise. IT follows was, hands down, one of the most impressive horrors of the last decade'.

While an eighth penned: 'Finally someone let that man cook after making one of the best movies of all time and it's criminally slept on.'

And another tweeted: 'I was completely not expecting this, but bring it on!! The first was a classic so I cannot wait to see where they go with its sequel.'

However, there were some fans who were concerned that the sequel was unnecessary and worried it could 'spoil' the first film.

One admitted: 'God it follows is my favorite movie ever I'm so nervous about this, does it need a sequel?? Probably not. But I will be sat'.

Another agreed, writing: 'Excellent film but did it need a sequel? I hope they don't try to explain the 'creature'.

A third begged: 'Please don't spoil it. Just leave it alone' and a fourth added: 'Rather they left the original tbh. Not everything needs a sequel.'

Another person tweeted: 'Breaking news in two things can be true: IT FOLLOWS is a brilliant, formally ingenious horror movie that absolutely did not cry out for a sequel; and I will be first in line to see what David Robert Mitchell does with a second shot at the premise.'

And a sixth echoed: 'It Follows ended perfectly and probably doesn't need a sequel. But I'm excited to see where they go with this.'
