A 9-year-old girl has died after she was crushed by a falling palm tree while playing with friends.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reported the girl and two other children were playing on an obstacle course strap hooked between two trees at the Smith Farm housing community in Lake Worth.

One of the trees along Hagen Ranch and Hypoluxo roads fell, collapsing on the girl and striking an 8-year-old boy.

The boy suffered minor injuries, but the girl died from hers.

The names of the injured children have not been released.

Around 6:15pm Sunday, Palm Beach Fire Rescue squads received a report that a tree had fallen and struck the children. When officers arrived, they found the three injured children and rushed the girl to Delray Beach Medical Center.

The other two children were taken by ambulance to a local trauma center.

Palm Beach Sheriff Department spokeswoman Teri Barbera said deputies had opened an investigation but believed the death to be accidental.

Despite the trees appearing healthy and stable, there was some rot inside.

The girl was revealed to be a student at Coral Reef Elementary School through a phone call to parents Monday.

'It is with great sadness that I inform you one of our students tragically passed away following an off-campus incident this weekend,' Principal Sean Bohne said.

He added the student's name would not be released out of respect for the family.

'Grief counselors will be made available for our students and staff to ensure they have the emotional support they may need to help them through this tragedy.'

Parents were told to monitor their children's behavior for any signs of distress.

'At Coral Reef Elementary, we are a family who grieves our losses together,' Bohne said.
