The family of Las Vegas teen Jonathan Lewis who was allegedly beaten to death by a gang of bullies outside his school has launched an anti-bullying foundation in his memory.

Named 'Team Jonathan', the foundation appears set to partner with other anti-bullying campaigns including Choose Love and Dads in Schools, to combat a recent surge in bullying across America.

The teen's father, Jonathan Lewis Sr, has claimed the mob that attacked his son have were involved in similar incidents previously - and locals claim the school district has a widespread bullying problem.

It comes as eight alleged members of the group are charged with Lewis' murder, with Las Vegas police saying they are still searching for two others believed to have participated in the melee.

According to the newly-set-up foundation's website, the organization intends to combat bullying in a number of ways, including building a social media mentoring and safety app.

The app will include a safety alert system, and has a 'Love Protector' that it says will 'allow all community members to be able to get together to stop bullying and spread love.'

It will also work with students directly, demand the Clark County School District bring accountability to bullying incidents, and help set up after-school programs.

Through its work with Choose Love, teens will also receive conflict and trauma resolution training, at a time when experts warn young people in the US are suffering unprecedented mental health challenges.

Bullying incidents have been gaining more and more attention in recent years, with a report from the RAND Corporation earlier this year finding that teachers are more concerned by bullying than drugs and even school shootings.

A PEW Research Center survey of parents in 2022 found that almost three-quarters are very or somewhat concerned that their child could be bullied at school, a figure that stood at 60 percent in 2015.

Jonathan's father told NewsNation that the group who attacked his son has been involved in similar assaults before at Rancho High School - just a few blocks away from where the incident took place.

Eight teenagers have been charged with Lewis' murder, who cops said agreed to fight the group in a row over stolen wireless headphones.

Lt. Jason Johansson of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said all the people involved — believed to be 10 — were students of Rancho High School.

Johansson described a viral video showing the beating as 'void of humanity', while Lewis's father said he 'can't watch' the clip.

Revealing further details of the attack which has shocked the nation, Johansson said that a citizen found Lewis unresponsive after the beating, which happened in an alleyway near the school, and brought him back to the school.

Lewis was then taken to UMC where doctors determined that he had suffered 'non-survivable head trauma,' Fox 5 Vegas reported.

'As soon as a punch is thrown, ten subjects immediately swarm him,' he said, noting that investigators were able to identify ten subjects, with eight of those 'positively identified' as suspects.

Johansson said the process is underway for the eight to be charged as adults.

LVMPD will be releasing photos of the two additional individuals they want to find, who participated in the beating but have not yet been identified.

As the footage was caught on camera and shared to social media, officials believe there may be other angles of the attack that they are urging to be brought forward.

'There's a high likelihood that there's additional video out there that we don't have,' Johansson said, urging parents to talk to their children about what happened and not 'put your head in the sand'.

Lewis Sr has since set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of his son's untimely death, and he said the proceeds - which have topped $100,000 - will be split between Jonathan's mother's and father's families.

The funds are to be used 'for healing', the GoFundMe page says, as well as setting up the foundation.

According to the fundraiser set up after Lewis' death, which cites the teen's girlfriend, his decision to leap into action was because the other bullied student he helped was far smaller, and had items stolen from him by the group.

The page described him as 'a kind, loving, gentle young man who has the heart of a champion and the brightest loving energy that attracts people to him with love.'

The family, writing before his death, said: 'He's an aspiring artist, devoted big brother, and a fierce protector of love ones!

'We are so grateful for all the love and community support that has poured in for our son and hope that the world will focus on all that love and compassion as a beacon of hope for human relations and place recognition upon how much stronger the love and the spirit of community is than the dark moments of violence.

'Love wins our son is a champion of love and family and the resilient spirit of human perseverance and will to be good and kind and loving!'
