A woman's tips on how to properly clean a chopping board has been ridiculed, with skeptics questioning her sage advice.

Aesthetic nurse practitioner Miranda, who claimed the average cutting board has 200 times more fecal bacteria than a toilet seat, posted a TikTok with an easy way to clean the wooden board.

Her bizarre hack involved mixing together sea salt, vinegar, and lemon, and scrubbing the cutting board for five minutes before rinsing.

In the clip, which has been viewed more than 1.8 million times, Miranda sprinkled salt onto the board, before pouring vinegar onto the wooden surface and squeezing some lemon juice on before scrubbing it with half a lemon.

She then washed her concoction off with water, declaring in the caption that she was 'really grossed out' when she found out how much fecal matter was apparently on the board.

However, some users were unsure if her trick was actually cleaning the board - many questioning the sanitizing properties of lemon, vinegar and salt.

'Lemon and salt are definitely not "sanitizing" anything lol, would you want [your] doctor putting lemon and salt on his hands before surgery?' questioned one user.

'I just use my toilet seat as cutting board. 200 times less bacteria than my chopping boards,' joked another TikTok user.

'How are you getting fecal matter on your chopping board?' one stunned person wrote.

Another chimed in with: 'I don't think you're using your cutting board the right way bestie.'

'Y'all you're not supposed to use meats on woods cause the juices sink into it use a plastic one for meats and your veggies for the wood cutting board!!' suggested one sanitary chopping board user.

There has been a divide over whether a wooden or plastic chopping board is more hygienic, with research finding that both are equally as safe - provided they are both cleaned properly. It is also suggested that a separate board is used for meat and vegetables.

However, research published in 2015 found wooden chopping boards are actually just as safe as plastic. The research suggested that although wood is harder to sanitize it's naturally anti-microbial.

Former food researcher Dean O. Cliver, Ph.D, told All Recipes: 'Although the bacteria that have disappeared from the wood surfaces are found alive inside the wood for some time [they] can be detected only by splitting or gouging the wood or by forcing water completely through from one surface to the other.'

But the type of wood is important to how hygienic the chopping board is, with hardwoods are better at resisting bacteria.

'Hardwoods like maple are fine-grained, and the capillary action of those grains pulls down fluid, trapping the bacteria—which are killed off as the board dries after cleaning,' says Ben Chapman, a food safety researcher at NC State.

He went on to say that 'soft woods' - like cypress - are less likely to dull the edge of the knife, but are more of  a food safety risk.

'That's because they have larger grains, which allows the wood to split apart more easily, forming grooves where bacteria can thrive,' Chapman explained.
