A woman has suffered a hilarious hair mishap after spending $400 on failed pin curls, with her sister documenting the beauty faux pas in a now-viral TikTok

Leigha Antonia, from New York, detailed the ordeal on the video-sharing platform, with the overlaid text reading, 'My sister getting her hair done for $400 in preparation for our Europe trip,' and the caption: 'Naur.'

Usually Leigha shares 'thoughts and fits' with her 22,000 followers, and recently this included their vacation beauty prep — but it didn't go quite as planned.

Commenters were shocked by the outdated pin curls and wondered why she would spend so much money on the hairstyle.

The vintage staple: What are pin curls?

  • A hairstylist uses a curling iron and then rolls the hair around their finger to maintain the curl
  • The stylist then pins the curl close to the scalp with two bobby pins crossed
  • Once the hair is completely set, locks can be unpinned and let down
  • The style was particularly popular in the 1940s and 50s

In the video, her sister showed off pinned-up curls that she had to take down herself one by one.

While her sister took down the curls, their grandmother could be seen howling with laughter in the background.

The curls looked tight and messy, with many of them not falling into gentle waves at all.

Instead, the curls looked completely disheveled and each one was different.

The video revealed the shocking results, which were certainly not worth hundreds of dollars... and TikTok commenters agreed.

'$400 for a wash, blow dry and curl is nuts,' one popular comment read.

In response to the backlash, Leigha shared a video of her sister 'reacting to mean comments on her viral vid,' with the sibling urging people to 'empower women,' and labeled her trolls 'mean.'

Others loved that the grandmother was getting in on the joke, writing, 'Not Granny laughing,' and 'Granny just got $400 worth of comedy.'

Most people were simply concerned by how much the hairstylist was charging, asking, '$400 on hot rollers? Also she knows she's about to go on a long plane ride first, right?'

Others wrote '$400 was the cost of the plane ticket right?' and '$400?!?!? For curls pinned up????'

One person pointed out, 'I think you added one too many zeros there.'

'I knew the second I seen the curls pinned upwards,' one commenter pointed out, which sparked a conversation, as another responded: 'My thoughts exactly! Who does that?'

'If they're pinned up it makes the curls start by flipping up if that makes sense. If it's pinned down they'll fall like normal curls,' a helpful commenter weighed in.

One beauty guru took to the comments and clarified, 'Kinda like when you curl the front piece of your hair the wrong direction so it looks real odd flipping into your face.'

A commenter quipped, 'She's ready for Versailles,' referencing Queen of France Marie Antoinette's elaborately curled wigs, while another critic compared her locks to George Washington's famous hairstyle, which was tied back in a powdered ponytail.

Another wrote: 'That's a perfect hairstyle for 1800s trip.'

Leigha isn't the first person to document a hair disaster on social media — and go viral for their efforts.

Chicago-based comedian Maggie Hughes DePalo shared a trending TikTok after her hair-raising experience getting a blowout and her followers couldn't believe how high her coiffure was, even touching the top of her vehicle.

Hopefully, the sisters had a good trip in Europe, and were able to get their money back for the failed hairdo.
