A driver has been rescued from the roof of his truck moments before raging flood water swept it away amid a dramatic helicopter intervention.

Pacific Northwest coast guard teams have shared footage of the incredible moment crews used an MH-60 Jayhawk to airlift a man to safety in the coastal city of Astoria, located in Oregon, just over the southern border from Washington state.

The area has been the epicenter of a deadly atmospheric event known as a 'Pineapple Express' which continues to pound the Pacific Northwest.

Washington and Oregon were pummeled with more than eight inches of rain early this week, as flash floods turned roads into rivers and killed one man who drowned in Portland's Johnson Creek Monday morning.

USCG Pacific Northwest said they rescued five people amid biblical conditions on Tuesday, including the man stranded on the roof of his truck.

Incredible footage shows the Jayhawk propellers whirring in the air several meters above a large body of brown water which stretches as far as the eye can see.

The motorist can be seen huddled on top of his truck as the flood threatens to submerge it, with the vehicle's roof only just visible above the rising water levels.

A first responder wearing flippers and diving gear is gradually lowered from the helicopter.

He battles strong gusts which send flood water spraying in all directions to reach the terrified motorist.

Eventually landing on top of the truck, the rescuer speaks with the stranded man, attaches him to his harness and lifts him to safety.

They ascend into the air as crew members in the helicopter hoist them into the aircraft.

The footage also shows brief moments from the rescues of four more people, who were airlifted into the Jayhawk using baskets, harnesses and life jackets.

USCG Pacific Northwest said they rushed to rescue the first man after receiving a call at 10.20am from the Cathlament Fire Department requesting backup.

The fire department said four people needed rescuing after they became trapped near their home surrounded by four feet of water.

But as the air crew arrived on scene at 11.08am, they were immediately diverted to assist the man trapped on the truck who needed assistance more urgently.

The man, along with the four people from the house, were transported to Coast Guard Air Station Astoria where emergency medical services were waiting. They are all in stable conditions.

The Coast Guard advises the public to heed weather warnings and to check www.weather.gov for flood warnings. In the event of an emergency call 911.

Tuesday's rescue comes after an Oregon man was swept to his death on Monday, and millions remain under a flood alert in the Pacific Northwest.

Emergency crews in Portland, Oregon were unable to rescue the man from flooded Johnson Creek on Monday morning.

His body was recovered later that afternoon, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, after a witness reported a man floating atop an outdoor furniture cushion while being swept downstream.

The man's friend, Jeffrey Tristant, told KATU that he was helping homeless campers in the area when he was carried away 'in the blink of an eye.'

The Clackamas County Water Rescue Team was deployed to the area, but after both of their crafts flipped, rescuers decided that it was unsafe to continue.

The search-and-rescue operation was switched to a recovery effort before crews succeeded in finding the man's body.
