Superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli is to perform at a multi-million dollar fundraiser for US presidential hopeful Robert F Kennedy Junior as the contest for the 2024 poll gets under way.

RFK Jr, who is running as an independent, will be joined by celebrities and 'well-wishers' including Martin Sheen, Mike Tyson, Dionne Warwick and Kennedy’s actress wife Cheryl Hines, according to the organisers, who released the information on social media last night.

RFK has already had a helping hand from music star Eric Clapton, who helped raise a reported $2.2mUS when he performed at private party in September.

This month's event, which doubles as a 70th birthday party, will take place in the wealthy resort town of Indian Wells - famous for its tennis tournament, on January 22, the eve of the New Hampshire primaries.

First on the US election calendar, the New Hampshire vote to choose candidates is traditionally taken as the starting gun for the presidential race.

Behind both Trump and Biden, Kennedy, who quit the fight for the Democratic nomination earlier this year, is currently in third place.

But he is scoring higher than any independent candidate for decades.

Around one in five voters would be likely to choose him, according to the latest figures, with an earlier November poll putting him as high as 36 per cent.

Appealing to what he has termed a ‘silent majority’ (and running as silentmajority4RFK), Kenned Jr appears to be taking potential voters from both Democrats and Republicans, with some analysts suggesting he will do more damage to Trump thanks to a conservative manifesto which promises tough measures on illegal immigration and a retreat from foreign adventures, including the war in Ukraine.

His pledges have included ‘winding down the warfare state, unravelling the corrupt merger of state and corporate power, improving our food and ending the chronic disease epidemic that debilitates 60 per cent of American children, restoring the middle class, closing the border and enlarging legal immigration.'

Sources suggest they are hoping to raise $2m US, with tickets to attend the birthday gala ranging from $2,500 to $5,000.

The event been organised through two Political Action Committees or PACs including one named American Values run by US publisher Tony Lyons and another organised by interviewer and documentary maker Daphne Barak.

Lyons’s Skyhorse Publishing picked up both Woody Allen’s memoir and Philip Roth biography after others dropped the projects.

Lyons has also published RFK Jr, who has attracted criticism for his anti-vaccine stance, claiming at one point that ‘no vaccine is safe and effective’ - although he later told a Congressional committee that he had never been anti-vax.

In September, fellow vaccine sceptic Eric Clapton helped raise more than $2m for Kennedy Jr when he performed at a private fundraising event, where tickets cost up to $6,600
