The New York City Police Department has released bodycam footage of the moment officers shot dead a 78-year-old man who was holding a gun.

Cops responded to reports of a burglary in Brooklyn at 1 pm on April 13 and knocked on the door of the property where they were confronted by Caesar Robinson.

Video shows the pensioner revealed he had a gun, pointed it toward the two officers and took steps toward them.

The cops fired a total of seven shots during the confrontation, and Robinson was taken to Woodhull Medical Center for treatment where he later died of his injuries.

An anti-police brutality group called for the officers involved in the shooting to be fired and held a rally in Robinson's name.

Footage shows the two officers entering the building following reports of a burglary from Robinson's nephew.

One of them is seen knocking on the door while the other waits behind him.

Robinson is seen opening the door, and the officer is heard saying: 'Hey, sir,' before the pensioner brandishes a gun.

He then points it at the cops and attempts to step toward them before the officers fire shots at him and he falls to the ground.

Both the officers are seen on the floor and one shouts, 'S***', while the other screams: 'Oh my God! Shots fired, shots fired.'

They both tested negative for alcohol following the incident, and it was the first time either of them were involved in a shooting.

The gun Robinson had was a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver loaded with five rounds, and it was illegally owned.

His neighbor Norma Martinez, 70, said her son let the two officers inside the building.

'We hear, "Boom boom boom!,"' she told the New York Daily News at the time.

'I heard them like firecrackers. I don’t know what happened here, but why would you call the cops over a robbery and answer the door with a gun?'

She described Robinson as an elderly man with health issues. 'That old man couldn’t even walk,' she added.

'He had to use a cane everywhere. But he did do everything himself, groceries and laundry … I know one thing for certain, that old man did not deserve to die.'

The NYPD's chief of Patrol John Chell previously said: 'They were very upset, and they were a little rattled that they were put in that situation.

'A life and death situation in a three-foot space … They were sad, and they’re human beings. That’s the job they took.'

New York's Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation launched an investigation into the fatal shooting as it is required by law.

Robinson's death led to a protest organized by the New York Community Action Project, and they called for the officers involved to be fired.
