A hairstylist has revealed the simple mistake that people are making when they wash their hair - and the incredibly straightforward way it can be solved.
The guidance was shared in a video posted to TikTok this month by Los Angeles-based expert and content creator Matt Newman.
Newman, who goes by the username @mattloveshair, often takes to social media to share everything he knows about maintaining luscious locks, including his various tips and tricks.
In the new clip, which has since reached over three million views, Newman warned that the biggest yet most simple mistake made when washing hair is not rinsing out the conditioner well enough.

In the new clip, which has since reached over three million views, Newman warned that the biggest yet most simple mistake made when washing hair is not rinsing out the conditioner well enough
'You're not rinsing the conditioner out of your hair well enough,' Newman said in the video, as he stood under a running shower.
'That's it. That's the whole tip. Rinse the conditioner better,' he continued.
Newman then explained that he used to perform at-home blowouts for clients that were booked through an app, which is where he saw this issue continue to crop up.
He said that when he came to their apartments for the blow outs, the client had to have their hair washed beforehand.
'This was how I learned that many, many people do not wash the conditioner, or even the shampoo, out of their hair well enough,' Newman furthered.
'Even if they didn't have clumps of conditioner left, there would be residue in the hair that I could just feel wasn't rinsed out well enough.'
Leaving conditioner in your hair longer than it's meant to be in can lead to unfortunate side effects like breakage and split ends, according to GK Hair.
So, in order to combat this pesky issue, Newman recommended washing your hair in a very specific way.

'My advice to remedy the situation is to rinse side-by-side separately,' the hairstylist said simply.
'So like, start on one side, and then do the other,' he continued.
The expert also recommended that people start rinsing their hair from the top, running their fingers from the their scalp all the way through the bottom.
'When you think it's all rinsed out… rinse more,' Newman wrote in the caption of his clip.
In the comments section, many users seemed to agree with Newman's conditioner guidelines.
'It's true. If I wash the shampoo out very, very, very well and make sure my conditioner is super rinsed out and cold wash after, my blow out is soooo much better - the built up products make it oily and not smooth for me,' one person wrote.
Another agreed, 'I used to think my hair was just super oily up until about a year ago, turned out I just wasn't rinsing my conditioner properly.'
'Build up both on the shaft and scalp got sooooooo much more manageable when I started rinsing my hair better. I feel like styling product works better now too,' someone else typed.

One user even thanked Newman for his advice as they wrote: 'I took your advice and you are right! It worked. Thank you.'
But others seemed less convinced.
'As a curly hair girl living in a country with humid weather my conditioner is staying in. I just squeeze out the excess after detangling and air dry,' one person wrote.
Another seconded, 'I feel like it depends on the hair type because I leave just a LITTLE bit in my hair and it makes it sooo much more hydrated.'
But Newman isn't the only one who has offered an important haircare tip in recent months.
In October, US-based hairstylist Carly took to TikTok to share four mistakes that are actually killing your hair.
Among them, she warned viewers that they may be overdoing it on the dry shampoo.
'Using dry shampoo too often and too much of it is actually clogging your hair follicles,' she explained in the clip.
'This can lead to extreme hair loss and when you have clogged hair follicles, they cannot function properly meaning your hair cannot grow properly.'
