An adorable toddler was left alone to wander the streets of Alexandria, Virginia, after being dropped off by an unknown person late at night - as police are now urgently trying to locate her parents. 

The child was dropped off around 9.45pm on Wednesday evening near a condo complex on 8 South Van Don Street in Alexandria, authorities said. 

Witness said the person who dropped the child off was driving a small white SUV, according to local reports. 

The Alexandria Police Department is now asking for the public's help to identify the parents or guardians of the child.

 In a photo shared by the police on social media platforms, the child is seen wearing a light pink puffer jacket and purple sweatpants. 

She appears perplexed, seemingly unaware of what had happened, as she is pictured sitting on the back end of a vehicle with an officer.

The girl was reportedly with her father, as a social media user who claimed to be the toddler's family member wrote under the police's post.

'This is my niece, please contact me,' she wrote. 'I just notified her mother. She was in the care of her father!' 

As other users urged her to call the police, it's not clear if she has contacted authorities as of Thursday noon. 

More than 12 hours after the child was dropped off, her parents have not been identified or located.

Authorities said the toddler has been taken care of by child protective services.

A person wrote: 'She looks to be taken care of. Dressed properly, hair done, she looks fed. This is very strange. Could it be a carjacking situation, an abducted mother?

They added: 'It seems strange they would just drop her off in this development if it was a parent that was abandoning their child. Why not a more safe place, why a random residential development.' 

Other social media users are praying for the child, as one wrote: 'Pains me that someone felt she had to be dropped off to be well taken care of. 

They said: 'I hope that whoever did is safe, well and mentally stable. She feels loved to me. Some people are just in unfortunate situations.'
