Not built to last! Computer-powered kitchen appliances including fridges and dishwashers are breaking down far more than their simpler 90s counterparts - with owners claiming they've caused floods and fires

New American homeowners have already begun facing expensive problems as reports of smart kitchen appliances breaking down much faster their 1990s counterparts have emerged.

The rising popularity of computerized appliances has made them more prone to accidents and much more expensive to repair, according to technicians.

According to Yelp data, Americans have requested 58 percent more repair quotes from thousands of businesses last month than they did in January 2022.

Data from Euromonitor International shows that North American households are spending 43 percent more on home appliances in 2023 than a decade ago.

But while spending has nearly increased by half, prices of kitchen appliances have only declined 12 percent in the past ten years, according to the Labor Department.

The discrepancy has owners now wishing they still had their '90s appliances - which were free from technology and seemingly more durable.

A homeowner named Sharon Swan notably spent $7,000 on a Bosch gas range and smart refrigerator, expecting that the reputed brand's products would last her till she decided to sell her Virginia house.

But she was severely mistaken as the first time she used the broiler, the oven caught fire and she had to call 911.

Her 'smart' refrigerator's ice-maker has broken three times in under two years.

While Bosch covered the first two repairs, Swan had incur charges for the third one - a staggering amount of $250, plus parts.

'I feel like I wasted my money,' the 65-year-old consultant for trade associations told the Wall Street Journal

Similar complaints have been made by San Diego's Kevin and Kellene Dinino, who wish they still had their 90s dishwasher after spending tens of thousands on repairs of their new GE one.

The couple had bought a $800 stainless steel interior dishwasher but within three years, they discovered a hidden leak - causing them over $35,000 worth of damage.

The couple had to file for flood insurance which included replacing the hardwood down to the subfloor and all their bottom cabinetry.

While the claim was accepted, it kicked Dininos off their policy and left them without access to their kitchen for months.

'This was a $60 pump that was broken. What the hell happened?' Kevin, 45, who runs a financial public-relations firm told the publication.

The technician, who has been in the business for 21 years, said he just bought a bottom-of-the-line dishwasher model from a mass-market brand with cheap and readily available parts.

'Consumers are wising up to the failures that are happening and going, "Do I really need my oven to preheat while I’m at the grocery store?"
