Charlie Woods, the son of golf legend Tiger Woods, shot a round of 16-over as he attempted to qualify for his first PGA Tour event.

The 15-year-old had aimed to make it to next week's Cognizant Classic by playing in the pre-qualifier Thursday, which will see 25 players and ties progress to the qualifying event Monday.

The teenager teed it up at the Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida - one of four qualifying sites - at 7.39am ET in a grouping that also included Olin Browne Jr., the son of the three-time Tour winner.

However, his dreams of playing on the PGA Tour were, for now, dashed as the youngster shot an 86.

The son of the 15-time major winner found himself in trouble early on with two bogeys thru his opening four holes before his card took a further hit with a double bogey seven on the par-five fifth.

His front nine went from bad to worse when he put up a 12 at the seventh to see him drop to 12-over for the front nine.

However, he fared much better on the back nine with two bogeys, a double bogey and six pars to finish 16-over.

His mom and ex-wife of Tiger, Elin Nordegren, supported him at the event but his famous father was nowhere to be seen.

The Hobe Sound course is one of four pre-qualifier sites with around 25 players and ties moving on to Monday's qualifying event, where four spots in next week's Cognizant are up for grabs. Sadly, Charlie is already out of contention for one of the spots from his site.

The Cognizant will take place from February 29 to March 3 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.

The likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose have already committed to playing the event for a share of the $9million prize fund.

While his first attempt at qualifying for his first PGA Tour event didn't go his way, it's doubtful that this will be the last time fans see Charlie try.

He is already no stranger to the limelight and the pressures of the course, having played alongside his 15-time major winner dad at the PNC Championship on four occasions.

The youngster last played at the PNC Championship alongside his famous father where they finished tied-fifth, six shots off the winning Team Langer.

Despite failing to win, Charlie impressed fans and even left the 15-time major winner stunned during the opening round .

The youngster outdrove the green at the par-four 13th, with his 321-yard shot bouncing onto the dancefloor and rolling off.

The shot left commentators stunned, while fans on social media went wild, ringing in the 'changing of the guard.'

Charlie also competed in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship with his dad on the bag last November. He finished tied for 17th in the boys 14-15 division.
