A mom has sparked furious debate after revealing she is only going to throw her kids birthday parties when they turn one and 16.

Marissa Light, 28, is a mom-of-one to an 11-month-old daughter named Daisy and frequently shares her parenting tips on her TikTok account, where she boasts more than 2,900 followers.

Recently, the Pennsylvania-based mom took to the video-sharing platform to lift the lid on her controversial opinion, in which she said she would only be giving her daughter two birthday parties in her life - one for her first and one for her 16th.

In a viral video, which has so far amassed more than 412,000 views, she detailed her 'hot mom take' and shared that she decided against parties because she never liked attending her friends' children's celebrations when she didn't have kids and wouldn't be subjecting her pals to the same events.

'Under no circumstances will I be throwing my daughter a birthday party every single year,' Marissa said at the beginning of the video.

'Here's the deal: She is getting a first birthday party, she is getting a Sweet Sixteen and she is getting a graduation party following her March birthday. Other than that, she is not getting any more birthday parties.'

The mom explained that she had been to many kids' birthday parties and never enjoyed it, so she and her husband decided against throwing the events for their own children.

'Now, I have been to many children's birthday parties whether they were three, seven, 12, and I'm sorry but as someone who did not have a kid at the time, they were not enjoyable,' she said.

'And I don't even think the kid noticed that I was there. I am not going to force that on my friends and family.'

Marissa noted that she didn't mind if other people threw their children birthday parties, but she wouldn't be doing it for her kids.

'Now look, if you are someone who genuinely enjoys throwing your child a birthday party, pop off, queen,' she explained.

'Do what you want to do, I'm not telling anyone else how to live their lives. I just personally don't find it necessary and I'm not going to be doing it.'

And while she wouldn't be giving her daughter a lavish party, she said she would be hosting family dinners and celebrating with cake on their special day.

'We will have dinner and cake with them every single year to celebrate my daughter's birthday,' she added.

'And every year on her birthday, we are going to do a "Daisy Day" or an "All About You Day."'

The 28-year-old mom said that on her daughter's special day, she would take her shopping, and make sure she was showered with love and attention.

She also explained that when she had other children, she would let them choose if they wanted their siblings to be apart of their special day or not.

At the end of the clip, the mom recapped her main points.

'And again, if you like to throw yearly parties, throw yearly parties. I'm just saying as someone who has been to a lot of them and kind of felt obligated to be at them, I'm just not going to be doing it,' she said.

'It's a lot of stress on my part to organize and plan and put on the party, and I'm not going to be doing that to my friends who don't even have children, my family who their children will be older. I just don't want a bunch of people sitting around at my house all day.'

Marissa's clip sparked furious debate, with many people flooding the comments section and criticizing the mom-of-one for her opinion.

One person said: 'It's wild how many people listened to the first 10 seconds and that was it.'

'Poor baby,  she deserves a birthday party just like everyone else,' another wrote.

Someone else added: 'I had a friend like this. your daughter will be getting birthday parties, they just won't be thrown by you. and she'll remember.'

'It's one day a year,' a fourth person chimed in.

One user said: 'Everyone deserves a bday party every year. Even a small one with a few of there besties.'

'They're not for you though. It's THEIR birthday party,' a TikTok user chimed in.

One commenter typed: 'As someone who didn't get birthday parties please do that for your kid.'

'So you didn't like attending birthday parties so you're not letting your child have birthday parties?' another user wrote.

'The kid who doesn't have parties (meaning no one gets invited) usually becomes the same kid that other parents don't think to invite at all,' a social media user mused.

'It's so sad so many parents these days are just thinking about themselves and taking things that kids love away. So very sad for the child,' a comment read.

However, others agreed with the mom-of-two and noted that 'introverted' kids would love it

One person said: 'An introverted kid will love this. Just make sure that you're celebrating that kid the way they'd like not the way you want to celebrate them.'

Someone else wrote: 'That is the perfect setup. When she's too little to care about a party, she gets a day. When she wants one, you're on board. Perfection.'

Another added: 'I love this idea.'

'AMEN!!! my daughter got number one number five and number 16 that's it and her last one will be 21! She's lucky she got that many,' a fourth commented.

'I would have loved this much more than birthday parties as a kid,' one social media user shared.

'You guys are taking this video out of context. the kids will still get the OPTION of a birthday party, it just won't be the default choice,' a supporter wrote.

Speaking to Today, Marissa said she was branded 'selfish' by viewers.

'But it's a little bit about me. I want to make those memories with my daughter. If she wants a princess makeover, I'd like to be in the chair next to her getting pounds of glitter in my hair,' she said.
