The primary candidate running against House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good made a pledge just last year that he would not launch a bid against the Virginia congressman.

Virginia State Senator John McGuire told attendees during a January 2023 forum in Fluvanna that he would support Good's reelection, according to video exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com.

But less than a year later, and only months into his state office term, McGuire launched a bid to oust the House Freedom Caucus Chairman in the Republican primary in June.

McGuire bragged during his response at the forum about being a staunch backer of Rep. Good and helping put up signs advocating for his candidacy.

'I was really pleased with Bob Good when he was fighting and standing up for conservative values,' an attendee at the Fluvanna Republican Committee Senate Forum said to Good on Jan. 25, 2023. 'Locally, there's been some scuttlebut that some people are not appreciative of that endeavor and they talk about potentially running against Bob Good.'

'I'm wondering if you would pledge to not run against Bob Good next year?' they posed to McGuire in video of the interaction.

'Well No. 1, Bob Good has done a good job,' McGuire replied. 'He's a true conservative – and we need more of them. And I'm a true conservative and I think, you know, we should work together.'

He insisted: 'My pledge to you is I'm running for Virginia State Senate and I'm going to support Bob Good for reelection.'

At the time, McGuire was running for a State Senate seat in Virginia's 10th District. Now, 13 months later, he is in the middle of a campaign for the U.S. House and no longer wants to work with Good as he seeks to take him down in the primary.

Rep. Good told DailyMail.com that Mcguire only pledged to support him during the race because he wouldn't have won the Virginia State Senate seat otherwise.

'John McGuire lied to the voters of the 10th Senate District in order to win a nomination battle, that he knew he could not win if he didn't pledge to support me for Congress,' Good said.

He added: 'John McGuire is a perpetual candidate in search of a race, and is in fact running for a fourth different seat in a little more than 2 years (56th House of Delegates, 7th Congressional District, 10th Senate District, 5th Congressional District).'

It is true that McGuire has run for office six times in Virginia in the last five years.

First for the Virginia House of delegates in 2019, then explored or filed to run for Congress in 2020, 2021 and 2022. In 2023 he ran and won his race for Virginia Senate, which he now is looking to cut short by launching a bid for Good's seat.

'He never had any intention of serving a term in the VA Senate, as evidenced by his declaration for Congress before he was even sworn into the Senate,' Good said.

'If he had any semblance of integrity, he would resign from his Senate seat and let the voters of the 10th Senate District select someone who actually wants to represent them in this capacity.'

Good is chairman of the conservative and very powerful House Freedom Caucus, which includes many members who led the effort to remove Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker. He was first elected to the House in the 2020 elections and is rounding out his second term.

But McGuire, who is endorsed by Rep. Marjorie Taylore Green (R-Ga.), claims the two-term congressman isn't MAGA enough to earn another two years and insists he is the more pro-Trump candidate in Virginia's 5th congressional district.

'Bob Good berates his constituents often and he trashes Trump. Finally he is getting exposed for who he really is,' McGuire wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

He was referencing an incident over the weekend where Good was booted from a pro-Trump store opening in Farmville, Virginia despite receiving an invitation. It didn't look good from the outside as supporters of the former president seek to oust anyone from office who doesn't whole-heartedly align themselves with Trump.

McGuire has jumped on the incident, saying on X that 'Bob Good's team calling the cops on Team MAGA is a perfect metaphor for his whole approach to Trump.'

Good's campaign director said she was the one who called police to the event when pro-Trump supporters of McGuire began harassing the lawmakers.

'It's not uncommon to notify local authorities when the Congressman attends or is hosting something in public,' Diana Shores told DailyMail.com. 'Our opponent's campaign is trying to spin this as if we called the police on him or his campaign team that was inside the store. Nothing could be further from the truth.'

Shores said Good was attempting to purchase 'Trump gear for himself' when he was kicked out of the store – and then says McGuire sent his supporters to harass the congressman.

'They were shouting, waving signs and attempting to block the Congressman from greeting constituents when asked to respect the congressman's personal space, they refused. So I called the police to let them know there was an issue,' she added.

State Sen. McGuire was headlining the pro-Trump store event in Farmville.

Good received a text message inviting Republicans to the event, according to a breakdown of that day in Virginia Scope.

Upon being told to leave, he asked: 'Are you saying that only some Republicans are welcome?'

Then-Appomatox County GOP Committee Chair Karen Angulo, who rented the space for the event, said: 'I am saying that you do not have an invitation to hijack the store. So I am asking you all to leave.'

Since the event, Angulo has resigned from her post.

Rep. Good has consistently said he is pro-Trump. He issued a formal endorsement last month for the former president's 2024 bid.

But when Good issued the endorsement, McGuire said it was a way for the lawmaker to come crawling back to Trump.

'Bob Good has been a Never Trumper since Day 1 and is going around telling people that Trump isn't pro-life and can't win,' he alleged in a post to X.

'Bob Good has come groveling back to Trump in order to save his own hide - friends, don't trust him,' he wrote in a second part of the thread. 'He'll stab Trump in the back again the first chance he gets.'

'Never Trumper Bob Good is only good for Joe Biden, not for the patriots of Virginia's 5th Congressional District.'

A senior advisor for Good's campaign told DailyMail.com in response to the video: 'John is most often referred to by his colleagues and politicos in Richmond as John McLiar.'

'He is a perpetual ladder climber who makes even the most ambitious politicians look like statesman running for six offices in just five years,' they added.

Rep. McGuire announced in November 2023 that he was launching a bid against Good – right after he was elected to the Virginia State Senate, and only 10 months after vowing to support the congressman's reelection.

'Join me if you agree we can do better than good,' he wrote in a November Facebook post, invoking the congressman's last name.

McGuire claimed he brought in $250,000 in donations in just 48 hours after announcing his bid.

But Federal Election Committee (FEC) filings show that John only raised $212,421.86 in total for the entire quarter, including $92,937.76 in contributions and $119,484.10 in transfers to the campaign from other authorized committees.

The race for Virginia's 5th congressional district seat in Congress is indicative of the heightened tensions in Congress and among some members of the House Freedom Caucus who claim members aren't pro-Trump enough.
