The best way to mind your own business is to keep your nose out of someone else's - advice one nosey neighbor has taken onboard after accusing a woman of running a brothel out of her house.

In a post shared to Reddit, the woman, 41, believed to be from the US, explained that she has been married to her husband for 20 years, and are 'still madly in love.'

'Due to mental illness, my husband can't work, so I'm the breadwinner in our family,' she explained in a post to the Am I The A**hole subreddit.

'This works well, I got a high paying job, don't have overtime and mostly work from home,' she continued. 'My husband is our home maker and seriously he's great at it.'

Last year, the woman was able to buy a new house with a large garden, noting it has a high fence so looking into their home isn't easy.

'You'd have to stand on your toes to peak over the fence,' she noted.

While the family are happy in their new abode, it did come with an annoying new neighbor, whom, the woman notes, is 'incredibly nosy.'

'When we moved in, she was the first to show up, not to help, but to gossip about other neighbors and warning us to not trust them too much and things like that,' the woman explained in the post.

Two months ago, the woman's husband's best friend lost his job, and shortly after his wife left him.

'The poor guy struggled extremely with bills, divorce and an upcoming depression,' she shared. 'So my husband and I decided to get him out of this situation.'

The couple decided to let their friend live in their spare bedroom rent free, until he gets back on his feet.

'The divorce is nasty enough, the poor guy doesn't need more stress,' she pointed out. 'He's a very nice guy, doesn't demand things from us, he's just happy to have a safe space to heal and get back on his feet.'

The arrangement had been working well for all of them, but the woman started noticing she was getting some strange look from her neighbors while grocery shopping one day and decided to confront them.

'Turns out, [the neighbor] had been snooping around our house and spread nasty rumors in the neighborhood,' she wrote, outraged.

The neighbor had reportedly been telling the neighborhood openly that the woman lives in a 'wh**e house,' because she lives with two men.

'She spread in the neighborhood that I must earn my money on my back, otherwise I couldn't afford such a nice house,' she raged.

'I was livid and told my neighbors on the spot what's really the case and then I left too worked up to focus on groceries.'

When she left the grocery store however, the woman spotted the nosey neighbor in the car park - and saw red.

'In my fury and rage, I stormed up on her and started screaming at her,' she admitted.

'I told her, whomever I invite in MY house is none of her business and to stay the f*ck away from us, my family is not her concern and if she ever badmouths me again, that won't go well.'

The woman defiantly stated she does not feel like she overacted, noting she was protecting her family and friends because 'gossip can hurt badly too.'

'Now some of my friends think, I massively overreacted,' she said. 'So I'm here for final judgement.'

But the majority of users on the discussion forum assured the woman she was not in the wrong, many even suggesting she was too nice to the neighbor.

'NTA - there's always the risk that the rumors didn't start with her but if she was the one gossiping, you're not an AH for telling her off,' one user responded.

'NTA. She needs a hobby that doesn't involve spreading lies or gossiping. You weren't too harsh. She deserved being called out in public like that,' pointed out another.

'Nah you didn't over react,' assured someone else. 'She overstepped her boundaries and had to suffer the consequences. It may teach her to keep her nose out of other people's business in the future.'
