AP under fire for Laken Riley coverage after posting story about how her murder highlights the 'dangers for female joggers' but fails to mention migration or fact suspect had been let out of jail a month ago

The Associated Press is under fire for highlighting the 'dangers for female joggers' while covering the murder of a Georgia college student- without mentioning her alleged killer is an undocumented immigrant already known to cops.

Augusta University nursing student, Laken Riley, 22, was killed while out running in the University of Georgia trails by Venezuelan native Jose Antonia Ibarra, according to police - details the AP failed to mention in its Saturday report, angering many.

'Hi, female athlete here. I ran this exact trail every single week of my college career. I guess I could have been snuffed out before I graduated, had a career, family, and the professionals at the AP would lie about the suspect bc it fits a preferred narrative,' said conservative political commentator Mary Katherine Ham.

'Ibarra is not merely an “Athens resident,” and Laken Riley and every other student was put in danger by not enforcing laws and allowing a man arrested 3x after crossing the border to hang out and work on campus.

'He had to escalate to alleged murder to be held and/or risk deportation. Good policies. Good work. This story even cites the 2018 murder of Mollie Tibbetts in IA as a reason solo female runners should be worried, *also without noting her killer was an illegal immigrant.* Just stop lying!'

Ham continued: 'I should correct myself. Ibarra has a handful of offenses to his name— crossing border, unlicensed driving/unregistered car, endangering a child (arrested, charged), now this (arrested, charged)—not 3 *arrests*.

'The more I look at this AP story, the dumber it is... It misses the story and its basic facts by positing that a more appropriate narrative-fitting story is the real story. And then it misses the story it posited was the story bc oops, that also serves a narrative it didn’t want to serve. And it does all this without ever doing a rational analysis of aggregate stats for violent crime perpetrated on female joggers, which might actually be helpful!'

Ibarra was arrested for Riley's murder on Friday, just a day after her remains were found on the Athens campus.

The 26-year-old crossed into El Paso, Texas, in September 2022 but had been released from a detention center due to a lack of space. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said on Sunday he had previously been arrested in NYC.

Ibarra has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, concealing the death of another and failure to appear for a finger printable charge.

Cops said that he did not know the victim and the crime was a 'random, solo act.'

UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark told reporters at a press conference Thursday that officers have searched Ibarra's apartment in Athens and evidence shows that he acted alone.

'He did not know her at all. I think this is a crime of opportunity where he saw an individual and bad things happened,' Clark said.

'The evidence is robust. It is supported by key input by the community, physical evidence and expert police work. Importantly, we were assisted by video footage from our campus security cameras network.'

Riley's devastated family broke their silence on Sunday.

'We wish to thank the public for their prayers and thoughts during this tragic time,' the devastated family said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

'Laken was an amazing daughter, sister, friend and overall person in general. Her love for the Lord was exemplified in every aspect of her life.

'She will be missed every day, but we promise to honor her life moving forward in a very big way.

They added: 'During this most difficult time, we ask that you respect our privacy, and provide us the time and space necessary to grieve our daughter's life that was tragically cut short.'

Riley was reported missing after he concerned roommate told police she had not returned from a jog.

She was killed by 'blunt force trauma,' police confirmed.

Since Biden took office in 2021, over 7.2 million migrants have entered the U.S. through the southern border.

That's more people than the population of 36 states. Arizona, for example, had 7.1 million residents according to the 2020 census.

After taking office, President Biden immediately canceled various Trump-era border initiatives, including the 'Remain in Mexico' policy that required migrants claiming asylum to stay in Mexico until their hearing court date in the U.S.

Biden also stopped construction of the U.S.-Mexico border within days of taking office.

But now, the 81-year-old president is reportedly mulling over using the Immigration and Nationality Act , which gives a president broad leeway to block entry of certain immigrants, to shut down the border if more than 8,500 try to cross in one day.
