A woman has revealed how would-be gardeners can tell whether their plants need extra water - and all it takes is a little kick.

Samantha Rose, from the US, who goes by @samantharose.keto on TikTok, regularly shares tips on topics including food and wellness with her 106,000 followers.

But in one video she put her gardening hat on, and shared some useful advice her father gave her on how to know when outside plants are in need of water.

Rather than touching the soil, Samantha suggests kicking the pot to test its weight.

If it moves easily, she says it likely needs water.

In the clip, Samantha adds: 'My dad taught me one of the best garden hacks.

'This is going to save you a lot of time, and a lot of plant's lives.

'The best way to tell if you plant needs water? Just kick the pot.'

She then gently kicks the pot, which barely moves.

'If it doesn't move, it doesn't need water,' Samantha explains.

'If it moves, it needs water.'

The tip went down well with her followers, with the video receiving 81,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

One person said: 'Not going to lie as a professional horticulturist, I walk around the greenhouses doing this all day and tipping hanging baskets!'

Another added: 'Thank your dad for EVERYTHING!'

And a third said: 'If it works it works.'

Others joked that they had attempted the tip - and broken their pots.

One person said: 'Hmm I tried it and it broke what does that mean?

'Does it need more water?'
