I'm a US expat and I've finally discovered why the rest of the world hates Americans

An American expat in Australia believes she has finally cracked the code about why 'everyone hates Americans'.

Tay Marin has lived Down Under for six years and said she received a harsh reality check when she first moved away from home.

'You have no idea how the rest of the world views us,' she said to her fellow US citizens in a video. 'We are not top dog - we are seen as loud and obnoxious.'

Tay urged Americans to educate themselves about other countries and travel overseas if they can afford it.

'Please get educated on the rest of the world - the whole world is not the USA,' she said. 'There is so much more out there and it is so beautiful, and I know not everyone is able to travel like me. I'm very lucky for that.'

Tay explained that people view the US the way the US views Florida.

'We're seen as some pretty crazy people - you know how everyone from the US thinks everyone from Florida is crazy? That's how the world feels about us.

'Do not get me started on guns, or the presidents, or anything political - but just know everyone thinks we're going backwards and no-one is vibing with it.'

The expat claimed that most Americans couldn't laugh at themselves.

'Please learn sarcasm, have a little bit of humour,' Tay said.

She also recommended her fellow Americans watch English comedian Ricky Gervais because he 'makes a lot of jokes about the US'.

The expat pointed out that Americans have the tendency to yell when they speak.

'Seriously, quiet down,' Tay said. 'You're a level ten, I'm going to need you to be a level four. We don't need to express all of our thoughts out loud.

'When you're in a restaurant, you don't need to tell everyone how you're feeling, what you're doing, your whole life story.'

Tay also noted that she's heard about many US travellers trying to pay with USD in countries that don't accept it.

'Please pick up a map,' she said.

A few people in the comments agreed with Tay's point of view.

'I feel like the rest of the world sees us as a screaming child at a restaurant,' an American said.

'I'm from Australia. Went to America for a holiday and someone asked me what language we use in Australia because my English was pretty good,' one said.

A third added: 'I swear I've never heard an American speak quietly or normally.'

'Can we also add that the rest of the world doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July - and that the Southern Hemisphere has opposite seasons,' one wrote.
