Movie lovers have slammed Tyler Perry's new thriller Mea Culpa as 'terrible' and 'one of the worst' they've seen - but that hasn't stopped the flick from rising to the top of the Netflix rankings.

The romantic thriller, which dropped on the streaming platform on February 23, follows the life of a criminal defense attorney - played by Kelly Rowland - who agrees to defend a man accused of murdering his girlfriend.

After being released, Mea Culpa, which stars Trevante Rhodes, Sean Sagar, and Nick Sagar, the movie - which was written, directed and produced by Tyler - soared to the number one slot.

However, people on the web have been left incredibly unimpressed by the film, with many taking to social media to pan the flick as 'trash' while others complained at having 'wasted two hours' of their time on watching it.

The romantic thriller received a just 15 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and movie lovers have since taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their dissatisfaction.

One person said: 'Just finished Mea Culpa and ….. I think Tyler needs to put the pen down for a while.'

'The only good thing about this movie is Kelly’s face and outfits,' added someone else.

One user wrote: 'I know everyone watching this movie coz of Kelly but it’s terrible.'

'Mea Culpa was terrible, beautiful cast though,' commented another person.

Another user added: 'Tyler Perry really needs to stop writing movies. #MeaCulpa had a lot of potential but in true Tyler Perry fashion, he did the most with the build up just to give a very short & underwhelming climax.'

'Two hours of my life wasted watching #MeaCulpa I don’t know why we keep letting Tyler Perry play in our faces like this,' someone else said.

One user commented: 'The only way I’ve been able to sit through this movie is to look at it as a comedy, because this can’t be serious I know Tyler has done a lot for people but why does he continue to write and direct.'

Someone else added: 'Mea Culpa (2024).. from start to finish, this is quite simply the worst Tyler Perry film to date.

'I'd go as far to say it’s probably one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure to sit through. Not one shred of emotion, not one tear or laugh. nothing for 120 minutes.'

On IMDb, the film received a score of just 4.2 out of 10.

In addition to the poor reviews left on social media, movie lovers have been talking about the saucy sex scene between Kelly and Trevante.

Speaking to People, Kelly noted that the scene was 'a collaborative idea with us and Tyler, and I’m happy that it was memorable.'

She added: 'That’s what we wanted. We wanted people to be able to take so many different things away from this movie, but definitely to be able to tap into that side and to be able to be creative, essentially.'

The actress explained that the stars worked very closely with an intimacy coach to prepare for the jaw-dropping scene.

'There was literally an intimacy coach there before this whole scene started, days before we did it. [They] talked to us about what we felt comfortable with, what we didn't feel comfortable with.

'So it's just like, "Don't touch here," you know what I mean? ... It's very, very specific,' she said.

There was a ton of fan frenzy surrounding Mea Culpa especially after the premiere welcomed many stars - including Beyonce, and Jay-Z

The couple was there to support not only Tyler, but the film's star and co-producer Kelly as well.

Beyonce and Kelly were both part of the girl group Destiny's Child with Michelle Williams, who also made an appearance at the premiere.

Destiny's Child split up in 2006 - after Beyonce launched her highly-successful solo career - but recently reunited for the Renaissance World Tour.
