An illegal migrant from El Salvador was arrested in Maryland and charged with murder in the case of a two-year-old who was shot and killed this month.
Nilson Trejo-Granados, 25, was charged by the Prince George County Police Department with first and second-degree murder this week.
The illegal migrant is the fifth person arrested in connection to the tragic death of toddler Jeremy Poou Caceres, who met his end while out on a walk in the park with his mother.
On February 8, Jeremy and his mother were walking on Kanawha Street in Langley Park when shots were fired between two groups of men.
The toddler and his mother were caught in the crossfire, and Jeremy was fatally struck. He was taken to Children's National hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Law enforcement officers say the gunfire was intended for Jeremy and his mom.
Prior to the fatal encounter, Trejo-Granados, according to ICE and police records, has had several previous run-ins with the law.
In March of last year, he was charged by the Montgomery police with theft. That arrested prompted ICE to lodge an Immigration Detainer on the criminal.
The local police department, however, refused to honor the detainer and subsequently released Trejo-Granados back into the public.
He was yet again arrested by the MCPD in September of 2023. He was charged with theft and attempting to obstruct and hindering.
ICE again unsuccessfully lodged an Immigration Detainer that was not honored.
Even before any of that, a DoJ immigration judge in Newark, New Jersey, ordered the man's removal from the United States in November of 2022.
Now, Trejo-Granados having allegedly killed a baby, the MCDC will choose whether or not to keep him detained following a request from the ERO - Enforcement and Removal Operations - in Baltimore.
The Prince George County PD's Homicide Unit has also arrested and charged two local teens, 15 and 16, as well as two other men they believe drove a stolen car to the crime scene and began shooting.
Those involved have all been charged as adults and are being held without bond.

News of the arrest comes as an illegal migrant from Venezuela was arrested in Virginia for the alleged sexual assault of a child.
The sheriff's office in Campbell County, Virginia, arrested Renzo Mendoza Montes, a 32-year-old man, on a pair of felony charges that relate to the sexual assault of an underage individual.
Deputies say Montes is a Venezuelan citizen who has been in the country illegally since September 3 of last year when he crossed the southern border into El Paso, Texas. He is currently believed to be in ICE custody.
Another illegal immigrant from Venezuela, 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, was arrested for the murder of 22-year-old UGA alum and August University nursing student at Laken Riley, who was found in a forested area last Thursday afternoon.
Ibarra was charged with felony murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping and concealing the death of another and was denied bond on Saturday morning - he too had an impressive rap sheet before allegedly murdering his latest victim.
