Mel B has admitted she couldn't be called Scary Spice today because people would find it offensive.

The singer, 48, who rose to fame as part of 90's girlband Spice Girls, adopted the nickname in after one of their early interviews.

However, now Mel has said in this 'day and age' the name wouldn't be as accepted as the world is 'a bit too politically correct'.

Despite this, she revealed she sill loves the nickname and 30 years on from when the girl group formed, they are 'still the same'.

Exploding on to the music scene in 1994, each member was given a handle - Scary, Posh (Victoria Beckham), Ginger (Geri Halliwell), Baby (Emma Bunton) and Sporty (Melanie Chisolm).

When asked how she felt about being nicknamed 'Scary Spice', Mel B told Elizabeth Day on the How To Fail podcast: 'I think now we're a bit too politically correct. I calmed down in these last few years.

'Before, if you were to interview me I'd be like "Show me your questions". I'd be the protector of the group that comes in there like. "Hold on a minute."

'That can be seen as maybe being a bit too Northern, or maybe being a bit too feisty, or scary, so that name was given - and I love it.'

Mel B said her nickname derives from the 'plain fact' that she is 'a bit scary' with 'larger than life hair'.

She added: 'That's just me. But, in this day and age, somebody would of taken offence by that. But I don't take offence by it.

'Whether you're black, white, mixed, there's a bit of scary in all of us.'

The girl group were all given nicknames after they were interviewed for an article in Top of the Pops magazine in July 1996.

The singer said despite 30 years passing since they were first coined - she thinks 'we're still the same'.

She continued: 'And, I just want to be clear, when those names got given to us - it was by a lazy journalist from some teeny poppy magazine and he couldn't be bothered to remember our full names.

'So he was like, well that one looks a bit scary because she has already snatched my notes and she's got all this crazy hair and leopard print nails, so he just named us off the rack like that.

'We were all like, God, I quite like my name.'

'It's funny because to this day, Emma loves pink - and if she could have her way she'd put her hair in ponytails.

'Mel C, you can never get her out of a tracksuit, and she always has her hair in a ponytail.

'Victoria's very slick and elegant. Gerry, she's gone through a bit of a change, but she's still that vivacious Union Jack girl underneath her being the lady of the manner.

'We're all exactly the same which is lovely considering we started when we were 17, 18, 19, and we're now 48, 49, 50.'

It comes after Melanie C has revealed Mel B exaggerated when she teased that there would be a Spice Girls reunion.

The singer, 50 - also known as Sporty Spice - poured cold water on hopes the band will get back together.

Scary Spice Mel B teased last year an announcement involving all five members was 'due imminently'.

But Mel C has now shut rumours down as she told The Sun: 'Mel, I adore her and she has this thing, and it can sometimes get us into hot water. Of course we're always talking, we'd love to do something else.

'I'd love to get back on stage with the girls but everybody wants to do something a little bit different or in a different way, so it's just trying to get everyone on the same page at the same time.

'But Melanie likes to manifest things and she thinks if she says it enough, it will happen. I can't confirm that there is anything happening soon but we're always talking about opportunities.'

Last May, Mel B said former bandmate Victoria would rejoin the Spice Girls for a mystery project.

She claimed there was an exciting announcement in the pipelines for the girl power group but kept tight lipped on the specifics.

She did however promise that 'all five girls' would unite professionally for the first time in 11 years.

The last time the Spice Girls reunited was for an iconic performance at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony.

In 2019, the band headed out on a UK stadium tour but fashion designer Victoria, 49, notably chose not to join claiming she was too busy with her clothing brand.

Mel B revealed the five Wannabe hitmakers would be releasing a statement soon about their secret project and were busy currently busy 'perfecting' it.
