A Texas man was left 'instantly paralyzed' after he was struck by a wave while body surfing on vacation in Mexico.
Jared Hill was surfing in tourist hotspot Tulum when a wave crashed down, shoving him into the sand and shattering three vertebrae in his neck, his partner Justin Raiford has claimed.
Raiford told KHOU-11 how he saw his partner 'drowning in the water' and rushed over to 'pull him out'. The pair then spent two days and visited three hospitals before Hill was able to undergo his first surgery in Mexico.
He was flown to Memorial Hermann Medical Center in Houston nearly a week later, where the couple learned that Hill needs another spinal surgery and will likely be hospitalized for several months.
Raiford, who says Hill's wellbeing and recovery is his top priority, is considering legal action after their 'nightmare' holiday. He has also issued a warning to other travels, encouraging them to 'do your research and have a plan'.

Raiford rushed to Hill's rescue after watching the horrific accident unfold on the bleach right before his eyes.
He ran towards him and pulled him out of the water after the wave 'drove him down into the sand'.
Raiford remembers a resort manager telling him that an ambulance was on the way, but said he was forced to call paramedics himself after waiting an hour.
Hill, who was reportedly in 'excruciating pain', finally made it to the hospital three hours after the accident, but the facility turned him away.
'They saw the CT scan and said, "We can't take him. He'll die if we try to take him".' Raiford recalled, adding Hill received surgery two days later at a third hospital.
The couple wanted to receive treatment in the US, but Hill was not stable enough to travel, so he underwent a procedure that cost them $20,000 out-of-pocket, despite having an international health insurance policy.
Hill's surgeons had to 'cut down the back of his head and neck,' Raiford recalled. He said he had never felt so 'helpless, powerless and vulnerable and scared' in his life, but added: 'There's nothing you can do. You're at the mercy of someone else.'

Jared Hill (pictured) also developed blood clots in both his lungs, had a 'huge pulmonary embolism' and is battling meningitis, Raiford said
Once able, he was flown back to US to continue treatment, where doctors revealed that after having been 'strapped down for so long and not moving' Hill developed blood clots in both his lungs, had a 'huge pulmonary embolism' and was battling meningitis.
Raiford added: 'Not only does he need another spinal surgery to help ensure that he has mobility, because it's very limited right now due to the situations and circumstances with the extended time and the quality of care, his life is at risk here, even at one of the best hospitals in the world.'
He is now urging others to have plans in place before travelling internationally because 'nobody expects for things like this to happen'.
A GoFundMe was created to help the couple cover medical bills and has already amassed more than $32,000 in donations.
