Well, it remains a popular question on social media, although no one seems to have the answer.

Women regularly take to Reddit to question the popularity of the classic design as well as on TikTok - where one inquisitive content creator went viral when she questioned why women sleep in collared button-downs and asked who invented the strange custom.

Button up! Why women's pajamas embrace the design

  • Easier for nursing
  • Temperature regulation
  • Can wear out as separates
  • Easy to unbutton after hair and makeup without ruining your glam

Content creator Alexis, who makes videos as loxsmith, joked that the person who invented women's pajama sets must have had to explain that they 'are pajamas and not cotton pantsuits' made for a 'business professional sleepover.'

'I know people don't wear bras to sleep but what about a collared button down?' the creator quipped.

'There will be a pocket right here on the boob because women love pockets but it will be too small to be functional, and I don't know what people would need a pocket for for sleeping,' Alexis joked.

Commenters agreed, with one writing, 'me watching this as I'm in my business casual pajama set.'

Another concurred, 'Business professional sleepover is so accurate,' as someone else chimed in, 'My friend and I went through a drive thru in our matching PJs and he asked if we were going to work.'

'Full silk button down pantsuit,' a commenter jested, to which the original creator replied, 'Just missing a pillow briefcase.'

To discover why the 'button down pantsuit' pajama trend started, FEMAIL reached out to sleepwear experts and designers.

The product developers at the luxury bedding and loungewear brand Cozy Earth told FEMAIL that women's pajamas often feature buttons to combine functionality, comfort, and style.

The product developers also attribute the trend to ease of wear, since the buttons 'allow for versatility in terms of temperature regulation.'

The brand also credited the ongoing trend to nursing accessibility and easily allowing for temperature regulation.

Miami, Florida-based Dani Read, the senior designer at luxury lingerie brand Cosabella, told DailyMail.com, the brand's original women's pajamas with bottoms are inspired by menswear.

According to Dani, the design choice is for both aesthetic and functional reasons.

'Buttons have become a decorative element to pajamas,' Dani explained, adding that it makes the look 'classic, stylish, and traditional.'

'Also, buttons allow for easy dressing and undressing, making it easy to wear, especially for those with mobility issues or nursing.'

The designer explained that button down pajamas are versatile since they 'can double as loungewear or even casual wear around the house.'

'Our body temperature often changes throughout the night, so the ability to button up or down gives you more options for different climates and personal comfort,' Dani added.

Reese Witherspoon's fashion and lifestyle brand Draper James is known for its perfectly preppy styles - including classic button pajamas in playful prints.

New York City-based Kathryn Sukey, the executive vice president of design at Draper James, told FEMAIL that the brand's best-selling style is Linda, a classic short-sleeve button down top with long pants.

'A classic button front notch collar pajama not only provides a polished look to wear around the house before dressing for the day, but the function allows for the wearer to get ready for her day in comfort and then to easily remove the top so as to not disturb her hair and makeup,' Kathryn explained.

And for many brands, the buttons can spice up a matching set.

'There are entire stores and trim catalogues dedicated to beautiful button options, and designers often turn to these catalogues to select the most special finishing touches for simple garments like pajamas,' Kathryn said.

And that's not the only personalized part of the pajama process.

'Simply by leaving the top or bottom button unbuttoned for extra ease and comfort through the night allows the wearer to personalize the fit of their favorite button front PJs,' Kathryn continued.

Ali Mejia co-founded Eberjey, the luxurious sleepwear brand that's a hit with celebrities like Selena Gomez, Sophie Turner, Jessica Alba, and Sofia Richie.

Ali told FEMAIL that the buttons 'make for more versatile garments.'

'Our best-selling pajama, the Gisele classic, features buttons running the full length of the garment,' Ali said.

'You can unbutton a few if you're hot, or you can wear the top fully unbuttoned with a bralette or camisole underneath.'

'If you're visiting your in-laws, you wear it buttoned up for breakfast,' Ali advised.

'A/C wars like the type I have happening at my house mean we all button or unbutton accordingly, the co-founder joked, adding that the buttons feel like 'a breath of fresh air.'

Waverles founder Brianna Amoroso, located in New York City, makes glam button-down pajamas with feathered trimmings - and they're not just meant for bedtime.

'Whether styled together or separately with a simple swap of accessories they can be worn right out of the house, making them perfect for travel when you need pieces that can be used for multiple outfits and occasions,' Kathryn told DailyMail.com.

Kathryn is also a fan of the button-down tops because they can be 'styled multiple ways and worn as separates.'

She suggested styling them 'tucked into jeans with heels or over a tank with leggings and loafers.'

The best part? You can always undo some buttons if you get too hot.
