A migrant has been stabbed 'multiple times' in the stomach and back in a frenzied attack at a New York migrant shelter.

The incident took place at 31 Central Park North in East Harlem, the site of a former correctional center opposite Central Park.

The 24-year-old victim was rushed to hospital in a stable condition, police said.

It is understood the attack took place after a fight broke out between two migrants at the facility.

Cops said no arrests have been made, but a person of interest has been taken into custody.

Police raced to the scene after receiving the 911 call at 11:28am.

The victim was removed in a stable condition by EMS who took him to Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The migrant shelter is located at the site of the former Lincoln Correctional Facility and has been used to house asylum seekers since last year.

The facility was initially earmarked to house up to 500 single males.

New York mayor Eric Adams faced backlash for selecting the location, with critics complaining the former jail was an inappropriate place to accommodate migrants.

It comes just a day after Adams vowed to install metal detectors at a migrant shelter on Randall's Island following multiple stabbings.

He also repeated calls for migrants to be given easier access to work papers.

'You place 1,000 people in one setting and tell them they can't work, all they can do is sit around all day, tempers flare,' Adams said.
