Speaker Mike Johnson swore in New York Democrat Tom Suozzi to Congress on Wednesday, officially bringing down his razor-thin House majority by another seat.
'I never thought I'd be back here,' the new congressman, who previously served in the House before leaving to run for another office, said on the House floor.
'The people are sick and tired of the finger-pointing and the petty partisan bickering, they want us to work together.'
'People are worried about the cost of living. They're worried about the chaos at the border. They're worried about Israel, Gaza and Ukraine,' he went on. 'They look to Congress and what do they see? The extremists get all the attention.'
Speaker Mike Johnson swore in New York Democrat Tom Suozzi to Congress on Wednesday, officially bringing down his razor-thin House majority by another seat.
But, Suozzi insisted: 'I'm a true-blue, dyed-in-the-wool Democrat.'
The Democrat beat out Republican Mazi Melesa Pilip in a contentious race to replace serial liar George Santos.
With Suozzi on the Democrats' side, Johnson can only afford to lose two Republican votes if he wants to pass legislation along party lines.
He had rushed to push through impeachment of Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the southern border before Suozzi's arrival in Washington, as three Republicans had voted against it. It passed by a one-vote margin

Suozzi's eight-point win was a strong sign for Democrats heading into the 2024 elections come November when they will try reclaim the House after a Republican-led congressional term marred by chaos.
As the southern border has become top of mind for voters, Suozzi tried to flip the script on Republicans, blaming them for the legislative impasse after they shunned a bipartisan Senate foreign aid and immigration package.
'It's time to get to work on immigration, on Israel, and combating Putin,' Suozzi said at his election night victory party. 'Let's send a message to our friends running the Congress these days: Stop running around for Trump and start running the country.'
Suozzi, a former three-term congressman and Nassau County executive, left his previous congressional seat to run for governor, but lost in a primary to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

After bombshell reports revealed Santos had made up much of his resume and personal background, the Department of Justice indicted him on 23 counts including wire fraud, money laundering and falsifying federal records.
Democrats on Wednesday passed a new congressional map that would improve their chances of winning the House majority through New York come November.
In one newly drawn central New York district, freshman Rep. Brandon Williams is in major trouble. Constituents within the new lines of his district voted for Biden by close to 12 points.
Suozzi, meanwhile, who will be forced to defend his seat almost as soon as he takes it, now faces better odds under the new map.
