A 10-year-old South Carolina girl has died eight-and-a-half years after she was beaten and left with severe brain damage by her father.

Egypt Morales died Monday after she was rushed to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital with breathing issues.

Police say her cause of death was from the extensive abuse she received at the hands of her dad Joseph Morales when she was a child.

Authorities found Egypt unconscious on February 13, 2015 after he beat and shook her when she was just 17-months-old.

His extreme abuse left her with a slim chance of survival but she went on to live for nine more years though brain damaged, partially blind, unable to eat on her own and suffering seizures daily.

Morales pleaded guilty in 2016 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison, but will not be charged with homicide due to South Carolina Code of Law.

Egypt's mother and sole caretaker, Kaya Jackson told WYFF: 'Everybody telling me she's in a better place, but I don't feel like she's in a better place. Her better place is with me.'

'I can't hold her hand. I can't love on her like I been doing. I can't do nothing.'

Jackson said that on top of her daughter's other disabilities, she was also quadriplegic, had to be fed through a tube and had cerebral palsy as a result of the incident.

Her father was convicted of child neglect from shaken baby syndrome which is a serious brain injury that is caused by forceful shaking of an infant or toddler.

As a result, the syndrome can lead to permanent brain damage or death.

'I wanted my baby to learn to ride a bike, play with dolls with her siblings, it was stuff that my child deserved to do, and we couldn't do,' Jackson said.

On Tuesday, The Laurens Police Department said that they 'immediately' contacted the 8th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office to see if Morales could face additional charges for his actions.

'Unfortunately, according to SC Code of Law 16-3-5, individuals cannot be prosecuted for homicide if the injuries inflicted result in death at least three years later,' the department said.

Morales is not eligible for parole and is expected to be released on June 9, 2030.

Though her daughter experienced a difficult life, Jackson said that Egypt 'was just always a happy baby.'

The grieving mother said that she has struggled with the loss of her daughter and has found herself looking in Egypt's room thinking that she might still be there.

'Mommy love you. Mama loves you, so much.'

'And I'm never going to give up fighting for you. I'm never going to give up fighting for you,' Jackson said.

Traci Fant, Egypt's godmother said: 'Maybe the justice will be us getting the law changed, so nothing like this happens to another family and they don't have to deal with this portion of it.'

A funeral for Egypt will be held on Monday at 12pm at Watkins Garrett & Woods Mortuary.

'Everyone loved her. Everyone would fight about who was going to push her wheelchair, who was going to get to polish her nails.'

'That's all it was about here was Egypt,' Jackson told Fox Carolina.
