The remains of 16-year-old girl who has been missing since 2004 have been found in Florida

During the search for Autumn McClure, investigators learned that she had been in a relationship with a couple she knew from her job and was living with them in their trailer in Ormond Beach, 60 miles north east of Orlando.

Years after the disappearance, the woman involved in the relationship, Jessica Freeman, contacted police to say that she witnessed her boyfriend, Brian Donley, strangle the teen. Donley died in 2022.

The last person to see McClure alive was her boyfriend who initially told police that he dropped her off at a mall. He later corrected his story to say that he actually dropped her off on a bridge where she was picked up by Freeman.

On Wednesday, Volusia County Sheriff's officers conducted a massive excavation in Ormond Beach. Sheriff Michael Chitwood said that 99.9 percent of McClure's remains had been recovered.

'There really never is a "cold case." The men and women that are assigned to our Major Case Unit and al of our investigative units, that's what they understand.'

During the course of the excavation, officers had to move out a mobile home from the search area.

Chitwood said that his office never gave up the search for McClure and regularly re-interviewed witnesses and collected DNA from relatives.

McClure was first reported missing by her grandmother on May 10, 2004. In the subsequent months, her grandmother said that she received postcards from the teen marked as coming from Melbourne, Florida.

It's not known if those letters were legitimate.

Information then led officers to the home of Donley and Freeman. The pair said that McClure stayed with them for a few days but left and they had not seen her since. The trio worked together at a Winn-Dixie supermarket.

In 2016, investigators made contact with McClure's boyfriend at the time once more. During that interview, he admitted to leaving her at the bridge where she was picked up by Freeman.

Two years later, Freeman was tracked down in Florida who reiterated that she didn't know anything about McClure's disappearance. 'He basically tells the detective, "I've got to get this off my chest."'

In 2021, a relative of Freeman's, Chris Miller, told police that the couple knew more than they were admitting.

A year later, Donley died during a medical procedure, close to the 18th anniversary of the disappearance. He was 49 years old.

'Karma is a b****. The sad part is he'll never face [consequences] in this world for the evil that he perpetrated.'

'I’m hoping to God that when he took his last breath on May 26 of 2022, that maybe he had a vision of where the hell he was headed.'

Following his death, Freeman got back in touch with authorities where in exchange for immunity, she said that Donley strangled McClure and that he threatened her if she said anything.

Freeman explained that McClure, a Mainland High School student, told them that she did not want to live with her grandmother and that the trio engaged in a sexual relationship.

'She came home one afternoon and saw Brian choking Autumn in the bathroom. By the time she intervened, she saw that Autumn was lifeless, and she left the [trailer],' she said.

Authorities are satisfied that Freeman had nothing to do with McClure's death. She believed that the motive for the killing was the potential that the teen would speak about their sexual relationship.

It wasn't until 2023 when detectives confirmed that McClure was buried somewhere in Ormond Beach. The sheriff said that over the years, Freeman a 'myriad' of stories about what he did with the body.

At one point when Freeman asked Donley about McClure, she was told 'shut up or the same thing will happen to [her].'

Prior to his death, Freeman said that Donley would regularly visit the burial site and was happy to see that a new home was being placed over it.

The sheriff said that radar technology was used to find the remains.

'To be able to go to the family and say look at least she can be buried with dignity now. Not folded up and shoved in some crawl space,' he added.

Officials have made contact with McClure's twin brother, one of her few remaining relatives. He said that he was relieved.
