'This is why I don't work behind a bar!': Prince William pours a VERY poor pint with Wrexham's Hollywood owner Rob McElhenney during visit to Wales (and cheekily tells the star, 'Tell Ryan Reynolds I think Hugh Jackman is funnier!)

The Prince of Wales poured a pint and downed a whisky with Hollywood star Rob McElhenney at a pub in Wrexham today while his wife Kate continues to recover from surgery at home - with Kensington Palace insisting she is still 'doing well'.

Prince William travelled to The Turf pub next to Wrexham AFC – the world's oldest pub at a sports stadium, which featured in the Disney+ 'Welcome to Wrexham' series - as part of a visit to mark St David's Day.

He met staff, charity workers and locals to learn about the venue - before visiting the pitch at the team's Racecouse Ground to hear accounts of the club's rise since the 2021 takeover by McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds , and meet staff and players.

As he poured the pint, William said: 'Still got a horrible head on it, but there you go. This is why I don't work behind the bar.' He also told McElhenney that he 'loves' cider.

Reynolds was in New York today and could not be present while he edits the next Deadpool film, but MailOnline understands he hopes to meet William later this year.

McElhenney told William that Reynolds had wanted to be there today, but the Prince: 'Because Ryan's not here you can tell him I think Hugh Jackman is funnier.'

The Prince also met with Welsh speakers from Patagonia - and inside the stadium, he was presented with a Wrexham AFC shirt by footballers Ben Tozer and Luke Young.

On the road outside the pub, a three-year-old girl called Florence Boyle presented William with a daffodil and blew him a kiss, before the Prince thanked her with a high five. They then posed for a photo with her mother Katie, 35, and father David, 37.

William then went on to spend time with pupils at All Saints' Primary School to see their traditional ways of marking the day, which celebrates the patron saint of Wales.

The pupils gave him Welsh dragon toys for his three children - and also flowers for Kate. He told them: 'I'll pass them onto Catherine as well, thank you very much.'

The children also took part in traditional Welsh folk dancing called Dawnsio Gwerin and baked Bara Brith, a Welsh tea bread flavoured with dried fruits and spices.

The Prince also met Year 6 pupils learning about the Gresford Mining Disaster, which saw 266 men killed in an explosion and underground fire in September 1934.

William wore the national flower, a daffodil, pinned to his suit for the visit and many of the children donned traditional costumes to mark the day.

He commented on the outfit of four-year-old Esme Dale, who wore a collar-sized daffodil around her neck, telling her: 'I like your daffodil, that's amazing.'

The prince donned an apron to have a go at stirring a mix for bara brith - a Welsh tea bread - and was presented with a loaf to take home.

As he left, after posing for a group photo with the school, students gave him three Welsh dragon toys to pass on to his children George, Charlotte and Louis.

James Douglas, 11, who gave two of the toy dragons to the prince, said: 'It was very good because we knew that he was the Prince of Wales and we knew it was St David's Day so it was kind of a coincidence that he came today and it was really, really fun.'

Mason Trueman, also 11, said the visit was 'really special'.

He added: 'He was really nice and kind and it was really nice to meet him.'

While at the school, William heard from pupils who had made it through to the UK finals of the Formula 1 in Schools competition.

Speaking to 11-year-olds Layla Conlin and Harlow Taylor about the car they had designed for the contest, he said: 'It is very important we get more girls into engineering. Crucial. This is a great way to do it.'

He also met pupils who had been working on projects linked to the Gresford mining disaster in 1934.

After hearing from the children, William said: 'That was a very good run-through of what happened and a very good history lesson for me, as well.'

Earlier in the day, speaking at Wrexham AFC, William said: 'It's a great success story you're building here, everything you've started and achieved it's fantastic, so onwards and upwards - it's exciting.

'And anyone who's a true football fan wants to see you do well.'

McElhenney and tenant landlord Wayne Jones took William behind the bar and he tried to pull a pint of the popular Madri lager. His first effort was all foam and declared 'horrendous' by the prince and his second was not much better.

'Still got a horrible head on it, that's why I don't work behind the bar. That might settle in about an hour, talk among yourselves,' he quipped.

Landlord Wayne Jones, 41, admitted it was a pretty 'terrible' attempt but they could 'soon knock him into shape' if he wanted to help them out on match days, when the pub gets so busy that fans queue down the street to get in.

McElhenney suggested his own blended American whisky brand, Four Walls, and the pair each knocked back a shot. William also told McElhenney that he 'loves' cider.

William, president of the FA, told a group of supporters about his own football journey with his club Aston Villa, how he was taken to matches as a young boy and a downturn in their fortunes almost 10 years ago rekindled his interest.

'When we got relegated it actually spurred me on to follow them more,' said the prince.

He made them laugh when he admitted: 'The rise of smartphones, you can see more things and follow your team more closely, it makes you closer to your team - but it's also emotionally worse.'

The prince travelled to Wales to spend the day marking St David's Day and he later visited a local school to learn how they celebrated the saint's day.

In the pub he met charities supported by the Turf including a local hospice and a food bank and later walked over to the football club to chat to manager Phil Parkinson and some of the players training on the pitch and was presented with a number nine shirt.

Wrexham have had a mini slump in form but remain fourth in League Two, three points behind leaders Mansfield Town, but their story has fascinated viewers from around the world thanks to the popular documentary Welcome To Wrexham.

Player Luke Young, who joined the club before the famous owners took over, told the prince: 'The club has always been there as a sleeping giant, it just needed that umph to take it to the next level.'

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator McElhenney described the visit as an honour and said he had arrived in the early hours of Friday morning from Los Angeles, had a few hours sleep and a nap and would be flying back for filming on Monday.

He said: 'Every time I walk through the gates it's a spiritual experience - I get goosebumps still three years in.

'And I just love talking to people from all over the world who tell me they've come to visit, and they don't come to see Ryan and I, they come to see the games of course but even if they don't get a ticket they want to see and meet the people of the town.

'What we like to believe is that all we did was just take a spotlight and put it on the town, and that it was always here and just waiting for the right time for the spotlight to hit it.'

McElhenney, along with fellow movie star Ryan Reynolds, bought Wrexham FC, nicknamed the Dragons, three years ago.

They have since made the club world famous thanks to their Disney+ documentary, 'We are Wrexham,' which charted the club's emotional bid for promotion to the Football League last year after 15 years.

The prince told Mr McElhenney that he and Reynolds were creating an 'amazing culture' at Wrexham FC and had managed to 'energise' the town, which gave hope to other teams and places that they too could 'reclaim former glories.'

Referring to Wrexham's status as the third oldest football club in the world, William said: 'You picked one of the most historic teams.'

McElhenney, who jetted in from Los Angeles especially for the royal visit, replied: 'That was done by design. We wanted to find a team and a town that had history, but also one that was full of people that we could identify with.

'When I came here I recognised the people as being like people I grew up with, my dad came and said the same thing. There's something very emotional about that.'

The documentary series has won the club thousands of new American fans and turned the town into a global tourist destination.

One such fan was Californian toddler, Florence Boyle, three, who presented the heir to the throne with a daffodil and blew him a kiss as he met crowds.

The tot's parents, Katie and David Boyle, originally from Orange County, were thrilled to unexpectedly encounter royalty after deciding to visit Wrexham because of the documentary.

'We tried to get tickets for the match tomorrow but it was sold out, so instead we thought we would come down to the club shop and pub today,' Mrs Boyle, 35, whose engineer husband, David, 37, is currently working in Germany, said.

'My husband had a work meeting in Manchester, so Florence and I flew over yesterday to be with him.

'We had no idea Prince William was coming, it was only when someone said we couldn't go into the pub because of a special guest that we decided to hang around and see what was going on. It was amazing to meet him, that's a moment Florence will be able to treasure and we'll never forget.'

William chatted to life-long Wrexham fans, brothers Trevor and Alan Roberts, 73 and 76, who asked him about why he famously supports Birmingham team, Aston Villa.

'A good friend took me to my first game when I was yea high, it was when Paul Merson was playing for them,' the Prince said.

'When we got relegated it made me want to support them even more, but it's emotional and it hurts.'

The Prince, who was later presented with a Wrexham shirt with his name on it, joked that maybe he could convert a few Wrexham fans to support Villa, at least until Wrexham completed their 'journey' by making it into the Premier League.

He also met old school friend, Humphrey Ker, who he attended Ludgrove School and Eton with, and who is now executive director of the club.

After greeting him warmly, William asked: 'Have you still got pugs?'

Mr Ker replied he had just one, a pug dog named Hilda. 'She's the queen,' Mr Ker joked as he showed a laughing William a picture of the dog on his phone.

Later, William visited the memorial to what was one of Britain's worst coal mining disasters and met relatives of those who were killed – as well as people involved in setting up the memorial and preserving its history.

The disaster happened in the early hours of the morning when the number of workers on site was much larger than usual because many had doubled their shifts so they could watch a Wrexham football match later that day.

William also met members from the Wrexham Miners Rescue Station which opened in 1913 to train rescuers in techniques on how to save miners.

In 1934, many of those who trained at the station helped in the mission to save workers trapped in the Gresford disaster, with three of them losing their lives.

William also held hands and chatted to 92-year-old Ruby McBurney, who was aged just two when her father, William Crump, 36, was killed in the disaster, and spent years campaigning for a permanent memorial to the men who lost their lives.

It comes after William yesterday visited a London synagogue to meet young people representing Jewish students and others helping to combat antisemitism among the next generation to 'reassure you all that people do care'.

During his visit, the Prince condemned the rise in hatred directed against the country's Jewish community, saying 'antisemitism has no place in society'.

He also spent a time with Holocaust survivor Renee Salt, 94, and held her hand after she recounted her fears about the rise in hatred and told her: 'It must be horrible for all of you worrying about this and I'm sorry it's got to this...it will get better.'

The Princess of Wales was due to join William for the synagogue visit which had been planned to mark Holocaust Memorial Day but she is recovering from an abdominal operation.

Mrs Salt remembered Kate when she spoke with William, saying: 'I'm sure if your wife would have been well she would have been here I miss her so much, give her my best wishes.'

William's visit came a week after he called for an end to the fighting in Gaza, which he said had seen 'too many killed'.

Kate is away from official royal engagements until after Easter following major surgery in January.

On Tuesday, William pulled out of attending a memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece at Windsor Castle due to an unspecified 'personal matter'.

Kensington Palace would not elaborate further but said Kate still continues to be 'doing well' - guidance that it again reiterated yesterday.

A royal spokesman added yesterday: 'Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess' recovery and we'd only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands.'

William, who was due to deliver a reading at Tuesday's service in St George's Chapel, called the Greek royal family to let them know he was unable to attend.

Constantine II of Greece, who died in January last year, was William's godfather.

To mark St David's Day today, it was also announced that King Charles has taken on the role of Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Welsh regiment, a role previously held by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Buckingham Palace said the role was 'especially dear' to the King because his first military appointment as Prince of Wales was as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Wales, a position he held for 37 years before their amalgamation in 2006.
