Actress Jaclyn Jose has died at the age of 59 after suffering a heart attack, her family have said. 

The actress, whose real name was Mary Jane Guck, died at her residence in Quezon City in the Philippines with reports claiming that she had not been replying to calls or text messages from her relatives.

Jose, who began her career in the 1980s, was playing the role of prison warden Dolores Espinas on FPJ's Batang Quiapo at the time of her death.

On television, her portrayal of Magda in the series 'Mula sa Puso' was her breakthrough, with a number of nominations to follow throughout a decorated career.

In 2016, Jose scooped the Best Actress award at Cannes Film Festival for her role in Ma'Rosa, which saw her play the main character of Rosa, who is arrested by police for drug-dealing along and must be freed by her children. 

She also received numerous prizes for her work in Asian film, including Gawad Urian, Famas and Luna awards.

She earned a FAMAS nomination in 1984 for her debut on Private Show and a Gawad Urian for Lino Brocka's 1985 film 'White Slavery.'

A post from the actress' family, released by her management company PPL Entertainment on Instagram, read: 'We would like to thank everyone who has extended their prayers and condolences thus far. As our family is trying to come to terms with this unfortunate incident, please provide us the respect and privacy to grieve.

'We hope this will put all speculations to rest.

'Her undeniable legacy will definitely forever live on through her work, through her children, grandchildren, and the many lives she's touched— as her life itself was her greatest obra maestra'.

She is survived by her two children, daughter Andi Eigenmann and son Gwen Garimond Ilagan Guck.
