Democratic Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine now charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy in bribery probe

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine have now been charged with obstruction of justice as part of a federal bribery probe.

The list of new charges were revealed in a superseding indictment with 18 counts related to the alleged corruption on Tuesday.

The New Jersey Senator and his wife are accused of receiving cash, gold bars and luxury cars as part of a bribery plot to help the Egyptian government and help businessmen facing their own criminal investigations. 

Prosecutors accused the pair of causing their lawyers to make 'false and misleading' statements about a Mercedes-Benz convertible and mortgages payments.

The Senator and his wife are accused of receiving cash, gold bars and luxury cars as part of a bribery plot to help the Egyptian government.

These were allegedly bribes businessmen, who have also been indicted, are accused of giving the couple in exchange for favors. 

Jose Uribe, one of the Menendez associates, pleaded guilty last week to a slew of charges including obstruction for admitting he gave them the car in exchange for help with a friend who had been indicted in an unrelated matter. 

Uribe, 56, is said to be cooperating with prosecutors and admitted he caused his attorney to falsely admit monthly payments on the car were loans.

The latest filing from prosecutors piles the pressure on Menendez as he faces calls to resign from members of his own party. 

Both Menendez and his wife have pleaded not guilty. He has also refused to step down from his post.

Menendez also was charged with helping another New Jersey business associate get a lucrative deal with the government of Egypt. 

He is set to go on trial on May 6. 

Just a day earlier on Monday, a federal just rejected Menendez's claims that search warrants that led to corruption charges and the discovery of gold bars and cash at his New Jersey home were unconstitutional.

Judge Sidney H. Stein ruled that multiple warrants used to conduct 2022 searches of the Democrat's email accounts and his home were properly sought and carried out.

The June 2022 searches resulted in the discovery of over $100,000 worth of gold bars and more than $480,000 in cash - much of it hidden in closets, clothing and a safe, prosecutors said.

The senator's lawyers had claimed the warrants were 'riddled with material misrepresentation and omissions that deceived the authorizing magistrate judge.'
