Stunning rendering of the A's ballpark in Las Vegas have emerged, as fans made fun of the $1.5billion venue by comparing its architectural design to the one of Sydney's Opera House on social media.
The 33,000-fan capacity baseball stadium will feature a fixed-roof and tiered seating as well as the world's largest cable-net glass window, which will face the Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard intersection, as the Strip will serve as a backdrop for the ballpark, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The window will limit the intensity of the heat throughout the summer and provides natural lighting inside the stadium.
Plans for the installation of an 18,000-square-foot jumbotron are in the works, too. It would be largest stadium screen in MLB in front of the Mets' 17,400-square-foot one at Citi Field - the current holder for the largest jumbotron in the league.
'Our design for the new Vegas home for the A's is conceived in response to the unique culture and climate of the city,' Bjarke Ingles, founder and creative director of BIG, said in a statement.
The A's will have their Las Vegas ballpark next to the Strip, with construction to begin in 2025
The 33,000-seater will include the world's largest cable-net glass window and an 18,000-sq-ft jumbotron, which will be the biggest in MLB
A three-acre plaza area will surround the state of the art stadium, leading fans to their seats
New business is expected to come to the area as soon as the A's start playing on their new field
'Five pennant arches enclose the ballpark - shading from the Nevada Sun while opening to the softy daylight from the north. A giant window frames a majestic view of the life of the Strip and the iconic New York New York hotel skyline. All direct sunlight is blocked, while all the soft daylight is allowed to wash the field in natural light.'
There are also plans to add 2,500 parking spots near the ballpark, as well as a three-acre plaza area that will lead fans to the stadium.
The A's are planning to start construction for their new ballpark in April 2025, once the Tropicana hotel, which will close on April 2 of this year, is demolished.
More construction is expected around the stadium, with the A's trying to attract new business in Vegas by the time they start playing there.
'The A's have created a remarkable design that adds to the rich fabric of must-see attraction in Las Vegas,' Bally's Chairman Soo Kim said in a statement. 'This is a once-in-a-generation project, and we are thrilled for the opportunity to develop a comprehensive site plan at this iconic location.
'We look forward to sharing more on our plan in due course.'
