A 'depressed' cartoonist jumped to his death out of his apartment window as his girlfriend tried to pull him back inside.

Jon Medwick, 62, died when he hit the ground outside 300 West 23rd Street in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, around 5.45am on Tuesday.

The cartoonist, who took commissions from private clients and worked as a freelance copywriter, was 'depressed' at the time, police said.

His 45-year-old girlfriend woke up to see him standing at the window of their 15th-floor apartment and rushed over to grab him before he jumped.

But, Medwick 'slipped away' from her grip, a police source told the New York Post.

She was unable to get a hold of him before he plunged from the ledge at the back of the building and died.

'His apartment is at the back of the building. From what they were saying he jumped from his apartment window,' one resident told the Post.

Police said they did not believe the fall was suspicious.

Medwick frequently posted photos of the Manhattan skyline on his social media pages.

He bought his Chelsea apartment for $1.45 million in 2012 and served on the building's co-op board.

His girlfriend lived at the apartment since 2021 after they started dating shortly before the coronavirus pandemic.

She was so distraught after watching him jump from the window that she had to be taken to hospital, witnesses said.

Medwick's brother, a frequent visitor to the home, was also seen speaking to detectives outside on Tuesday.

He is the latest well-known New Yorker to jump to their death from high-rise apartment windows in recent months.

In February, a man fell to his death from a high-rise in the Financial District.  The incident occurred at 19 Dutch Street at Fulton Street in Manhattan's Financial District, a luxury building where rents can reach as much as $10,000 a month.

A 56-year-old jumped to his death from the fourth floor of a swanky Upper East Side townhouse in Manhattan in December.

The unnamed man was found in front of 18 East 67th Street, close to Madison avenue, just before 7.30am on December 21.

The pre-war building rents units out for up to $9000 a month. First responders rushed the man to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
