An Alabama mother has shared her heartbreak after her two-year-old son was mauled to death by her neighbor's dogs.

Kayla Partain said her youngest child Mark Alan was attacked Friday in their neighbor's yard in New Hope, Alabama, leaving her 'completely shattered.'

'The hurt is unreal. I don't even feel like I'm living in reality. My children's hearts are so broken,' she said in a tragic Facebook post.

The neighbor, Ricky Clark, believes the tragic accident occurred after the boy opened the gate to his backyard by himself, and insisted his dogs have never harmed anyone before.

Neighbor Ricky Clark said he saw the child's lifeless body in his yard, but has been left bewildered by the attack as his dogs have never harmed anyone in the past

When the fatal mauling unfolded Friday in Clark's backyard, he said he was startled by the stricken father's blood curdling screams from outside his home.

'He was banging on the door real hard and he said, 'It's my son, it's my son, I think he might be dead,' Clark told WAAY.

He said he raced outside to find the two-year-old 'laying on the ground' in front of his dog pen, and he 'wasn't moving or nothing and the gate was open.'

The Madison County Coroner's office pronounced Mark dead at the scene, and coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill ruled that he sustained fatal bite wounds.

Clark said he has been left bewildered by the random attack as he maintains that his two dogs, a Husky and German Shephard, have never hurt anyone in the past.

'I couldn't believe it,' he continued.

'My dogs ain't never go out or bark at nobody or nothing... if I even had a clue that the dogs would hurt anybody, I wouldn't have had them.'

Clark speculated that the attack may have been fueled by the presence of a local bulldog, that he claims has been running loose in the area recently.

'There's a brown bulldog running around in the neighborhood, and it was running around in the yard,' he said, adding that seeing the dog free around the neighborhood was not uncommon.

'When I got my dog put up, I saw her running out of the yard, and I don't know if she had anything to do with it.'

He felt that the toddler may have seen the dogs and followed them into his backyard, which was latched but not locked, according to WAFF

'He might've opened the gate and that other dog might've come in here with him, and then they might've all went at it, and he might've been right in the middle of it,' he said.

Clark's dogs were confiscated by animal control, who told him they'll be returned in 10 days.

Mark's heartbroken mother Kayla said the devastating loss is something that will 'never get easier', but said that before the investigation is complete, 'it looks as if this was just a very tragic accident with no one to be held at fault.'

'Last night our world was completely shattered,' she wrote Saturday.

'I lost my youngest child, my mini me, my Mark Alan. The hurt is unreal. I don't even feel like I'm living in reality. My children's hearts are so broken.'

The stricken mother said her older son Cole has been left bereft at the loss of his young son, and hasn't come to terms with the reality of the tragedy.

On Tuesday, she said in another post that the two toddlers had 'always been thick as thieves', and had never spent even days apart.

'Cole has asked about him several times a day. Either just repeating his name or asking where he is,' she said.

'It breaks my heart so bad. It sends the entire house down a spiral of emotions every single time.'

A family friend has shared a GoFundMe to help the family deal with the financial burden of the loss.
