A Tennessee man is set to be taken off life support after allegedly being punched 'multiple times' by a bar security guard on a night out.

Austin Turner, 26, has been in a coma since the February 18 attack, after cops say he was knocked unconscious by bouncer Richard Cornelius, 36.

Alleged security footage, which has not been released, shows Cornelius wildly swinging at Austin several times before hitting him with a final punch, according to WSMV

Cornelius is now free after posting a $25,000 bail on charges of aggravated assault, while Turner's family have been left with the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support.

Turner's stricken stepmother said after the decision: 'He took a big part of us, when this person chose to do what they did.'

The 26-year-old was left with no chance of making a recovery after suffering a fatal blow that caused a fractured skull, which in turn caused a massive stroke.

As his family reels from the decision to say goodbye to him, they said they have been left confused by his sudden death as he was never known to become aggressive or spark arguments.

'He was funny, mild mannered, super polite, super kind,' his stepmother said.

'And I know in my heart of hearts that my son was not doing anything that provoked this type of attack.'

The tragic incident unfolded at shortly after midnight on February 18, when Turner and his friends had spent the night partying at the Tin Roof bar in Nashville, Tennessee.

They had been celebrating a big sports betting win, and when the night came to a close the group ordered an Uber home.

Austin was taking his own separate Uber from the bar, and told his friends to leave without him as their ride arrived first.

His stepmother said he 'didn't have any reason at that point to know that this was going to be his fate' as he let his friends depart without him.

Tributes have poured in for the 26-year-old after the tragedy, as a family friend described him as a 'good man, with a heart of gold and an incredible sense of humor'

At some point, Austin decided to try and get back into the bar, but was denied re-entry by the bar's security guards.

It is unclear what triggered Cornelius to allegedly attack Austin, with police saying he launched at the 26-year-old with wild swings before striking him in the head with a fatal blow.

Austin fell unconscious, and remained on the ground util medics rushed him to a local hospital, where he remained until his life support was set to be turned off on Thursday.

After Cornelius posted his bond and was released from custody, Austin's devastated family said his release has added further pain to their heartbreak.

'So, he is out walking around while our son is lying in a hospital bed,' his stepmother said a few days prior.

Without seeing the alleged surveillance footage, his family said they have been left in the dark over the circumstances of the alleged assault, and are appealing for any witnesses to tell them 'how it was provoked and things like that.'

'Our son turned 26 in a coma... unfortunately, Austin is not going to win his fight.'

Tributes have poured in for the 26-year-old, with a GoFundMe set up for his family describing him as a 'good man, with a heart of gold and an incredible sense of humor.'

'He is an incredibly caring and kind big brother to 4 younger sisters who adore him. He is a son, grandson, uncle, nephew and above all else - friend to all who know him.'

The CEO of Tin Roof, the bar where the alleged assault took place, released a brief statement on the tragedy, and said Cornelius is no longer employed. He has also reportedly had his security guard license suspended.

The statement read: 'We can’t comment on an ongoing investigation, but we are fully cooperating to aid law enforcement in their efforts and will continue to do so. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Austin Turner.'
