The brother of murdered Guardswoman Chasity Nunez was himself jailed for manslaughter in 2016 after the brutal assault of a teenager at a birthday party.

Collage Nunez, 28, was sentenced to between seven and ten years for the attack on Robert Walker, 18, who died of an asthma attack hours after being stabbed, glassed, and beaten with a baseball bat in September 2013.

Nunez and fellow attacker Michael Ventura, 21, were branded 'cowards' by the victim's mother who told them they had left her family 'forever incomplete'.

'Since you two cowards took our loved one, nothing has been the same, not holidays, not birthdays, not breathing, not sleeping, not thinking, nothing,' said Sabrina Givens in a victim impact statement read by her mother Hariett Hale.

'You two took Robert from us and now there is nothing but memories and a family who will forever be incomplete.'

Around 40 people were at the surprise birthday party for Alisa Perodeau in Bailey Street, Worcester, less than three miles from where Nunez's sister would eventually be murdered.

Nunez and Ventura were already at the event when Walker arrived at around midnight on August 31 and the atmosphere became 'tense'.

Ventura told Walker he had a 'beef' with him and the teenager suggested they 'take it outside', the court heard.

Walker's cousin was friends with both men and shepherded Walker into the kitchen while another guest edged Nunez and Ventura into a bedroom.

But when the cousin brought Walker onto the staircase, Nunez and Ventura burst out of the bedroom and caught Walker at the bottom of the steps where Venture smashed him over the head with a bottle.

Nunez dragged Walker to the floor and hit him with a baseball bat, while a third man, identified in court as Gio Paredes, jumped on Walker as he lay on the floor.

Walker's cousin grabbed the baseball bat from Nunez but Nunez pulled out a knife and stabbed Walker in the backside.

Partygoers chased the three attackers from the house but returned to find that Walker had disappeared and began looking for him.

They eventually found him sitting unconscious against a tree near the apartment complex.

He was still breathing but fluid was coming out of his mouth and his friends called 911 while they attempted CPR.

First responders took him to UMass Memorial Medical Center-University Campus, where he was pronounced dead at 5.41am.

Medical examiner Mindy Hull found that Walker had suffered blunt force injuries to his head, neck, torso, right arm and left leg, had a head laceration and a stab wound to his left buttock.

But she determined that none of the injuries were independently life-threatening, and that the immediate cause of death was asthma complicated by the physical altercation.

Nunez and Ventura both admitted manslaughter and aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors demanded a 12 to 14-year prison term for Nunez but he was sentenced to seven to ten, with three years probation. He is no longer in jail.

'This is a tragic ending for both families and all persons involved,' Judge Shannon Frison said as she passed sentence.

Nunez's criminal past emerged today after his sister Chasity and her daughter Zella were shot dead in a parked car outside their home in Worcester on Tuesday.

She was due to return to service on Saturday with the Connecticut Army National Guard where colleagues described her as 'incredibly resilient and brilliantly intelligent'.

Karel Mangual, 28, was arrested last night and appeared in court today as police search for his suspected accomplice Dejan Belnavis, 27.

Chasity's mother Noemi Nunez said she had never heard of either man, and cousin Tyrae Sims said whoever killed her had no reason for the 'senseless' murder.

'In any inner city, anyone that has any kind of morality understands it's always been no women, no children,' he told NBC Boston.

'I just hope they know the gravity of what they just did. They took two beautiful souls senselessly.'

Within hours they had arrested Mangual from nearby Passway 3 Street in Worcester, and appealed for information on Belnavis who they described as 5'11, 160 pounds, armed and dangerous.

Mangual appeared in court this morning where he was charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and one of owning a firearm without a license.

He already faced three open cases is and was refused bail before being remanded to Worcester County House of Correction pending a dangerousness hearing on March 12.

Chasity, who served with the National Guard in Connecticut, spent four years at Worcester State University and earned two master's degrees before starting work at MIT last year, her mother said.
