House Republican leadership told members of the GOP to not play games during Biden's State of the Union address, but some predict their colleagues could make it a 'wild evening.'
Biden's State of the Union Thursday night will be an opportunity for the president to message his accomplishments to the country.
Republicans, meanwhile, could lash out at the president during his remarks like firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., did last year screaming 'liar!' during his remarks.
Speaker Mike Johnson, however, has called for Republicans to display a level of 'decorum,' according to members of the conference.
His top lieutenant and second highest-ranking House Republican Whip Tom Emmer exclusively told DailyMail.com that though he will not be policing his colleagues' actions, he doesn't think Americans want to see 'childish' spats.
Republican Whip Tom Emmer said he will not police his colleagues if they interupt President Biden's remarks during his State of the Union address
During Biden's 2023 State of the Union address Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene repeatedly yelled at the president calling him a 'liar'
In 2022 Greene and her colleague Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., both stood up and yelled at Biden 'build the wall'
'I didn't come here to play childish games, or to draw attention to myself and my screwing around on the playground,' Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., said.
'Democrats are the ones that usually do stunts and do hissing noises and stand up and turn their backs and wear the same clothes or uniform to signify some objection.'
'I have no interest in that kind of childish behavior,' Emmer added. 'This is serious business in the U.S. Congress.'
Despite calls from leadership to not lash out at the president Thursday night, some Republicans interviewed by DailyMail.com said they expect the members could raise hell.
'I expect it to kind of be a wild evening,' Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis., said. 'I think there's going to be a lot of back and forth and we were kind of warned about that by the speaker.'
'Mike Johnson's trying to get everyone to maintain decorum and not scream things back at [Biden] because it was wild last time. So it's probably going to be worse tonight.'
Rep. John James, R-Mich., told DailyMail.com he too expects Republicans could lash out during the State of the Union.
'I actually think the president is going to bait a number of Republicans on purpose for their sound bites,' James said.
'And I think many of my colleagues are going to take the bait and play into his hand.'
Another Republican, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, said members giving 'a little bit of feedback is always appropriate.'
Despite Republicans interrupting the president during his State of the Union address last year, he was able to proceed with his remarks without incident
Last year, Greene repeatedly screamed 'liar!' throughout the President Biden's State of the Union speech.
She was joined in her loud opposition to Biden's address by a number of her Republican colleagues, who heckled the president with jeers of 'it's all your fault' and 'secure the border.'
Her heckling brought the Georgia Republican into national headlines where she received criticism for not displaying respect during the president's annual speech.
Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, said she was one of the lawmakers upset over Biden's State of the Union remarks last year.
'I was very frustrated with the president directly lying with the American people.'
'That said,' she added, 'I hope we maintain decorum in the chamber.'
Democrats, for their part, also have a history of State of the Union antics.
In 2020 during Donald Trump's State of the Union many Democrats wore white to signify solidarity with women's rights.
That same year then-Speaker of the House ripped a paper copy of then-President Trump's speech.
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi ripped up Trump's 2020 State of the Union address
Democrats have also used color coordination as a way to send a message during the annual presidential remarks
'You know, we've also had outbursts of on from the other side, we once had the Speaker of the House rip up a document, the speech, behind the president, a Republican president,' Massie said.
Still, some are hopeful for a peaceful evening.
'I think decorum is critically important for you to be able to to conduct business,' Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont., told DailyMail.com.
'The way that we conduct ourselves on the on the House floor is very important and and the the institution deserves that.'
Rep. Morgan Luttrell, R-Texas, said he will sit quietly during Biden's address Thursday night.
'My job is to sit there represent my district and respect the president and the position that he represents.'
'That's just how I am,' he added. 'Maybe that's my military background.'
