Two US citizens have been arrested after being caught illegally crossing the southern border, before CBP officers realized they had outstanding murder warrants in Texas

The two men, who have not been named, were caught crossing in Santa Teresa, New Mexico on a route known to be popular with illegal migrants.

Although they are US citizens, their crossing was illegal as they didn't enter with proper authorization at an official checkpoint.

Both are set to be extradited to Dallas after their alarming warrants were realized, and both have multiple previous arrests including unlawful weapons carrying, drugs, burglary and assault, according to USBP Chief Jason Owens.

The arrest comes a week after another US citizen was arrested for attempting to cross the southern border with a cache of drugs estimated to be worth upwards of $130,000.

Officials said they stopped a taxi crossing the border on Highway 86 in Southern California - only to find a huge stash of fentanyl.

The ride-share taxi was caught by a K-9 dog that led officers to the trunk of the car, where large bags of drugs were intended to be transported into the US.

Record-breaking numbers of migrants continue to cross the southern border - more than 3 million in the last fiscal year.

Some of those intercepted are wanted for serious crimes, sparking fears the porous border could threaten national security.

President Biden has taken a hardline stance on immigration in recent weeks, with the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley - allegedly by an illegal immigrant - further turbocharging the discussion.
