Oscar dresses that were TOO daring! From Cher's sheer showgirl gown and Cindy Crawford's plunging number to Ellen Barkin's see-through creation

The Oscars is usually when stars try to look as elegant as they can as it is considered a top event from the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences.

But sometimes the famous ladies go a bit too far and flash the flesh in low cut or sheer dresses.

Think of Cher's Oscar dresses by Bob Mackie or Angelina Jolie's gown that revealed a single bare leg.

The tradition is nothing new - in the 1960s Barbra Streisand had on a sheer number that raised eyebrows. The material was so flimsy, it even ripped.

Here is a look at the women who have shown the most skin over the years as Sunday sees the 96th annual Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood with host Jimmy Kimmel.

CHER

She got wild twice.

Cher attended the 1986 ceremony in this ab-baring, showgirl-inspired Bob Mackie original, complete with feathered headpiece. Cher wore a sensationally revealing Bob Mackie gown in 1988.

She was accepting her Best Actress statue for Moonstruck.

Cher is a 77-year-old American singer, actress and television personality who won raves for her role in Mask.

Often referred to by the media as the Goddess of Pop, she has been described as embodying female autonomy in a male-dominated industry. Her most notable films in recent years are If these Walls Could Talk, Burlesque and Mama Mia! Here We Go Again.

The icon is still very active in show business and now dates much-younger producer Alexander Edwards, 38.

HALLE BERRY

Halle Berry collected her Best Actress Oscar for Monster's Ball in 2002 wearing an iconic Elie Saab creation, which featured a completely sheer bodice embroidered with flowers.

Some critics felt the sheer top portion was showing too much cleavage but Berry brushed off the complaints.

Halle - born Halle Maria Berry - is a critically acclaimed 57-year-old actress.

She began her career as a model and entered several beauty contests, finishing as the first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant and coming in sixth in the Miss World 1986.

One of her big wins was Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.

She has also appeared in big movies such as Swordfish, Catwoman and John Wick 3.

The star has a rollercoaster love life that includes several marriages -  Olivier Martinez (2013 - 2015), Eric Benét (2001 - 2005) and David Justice (1992 - 1997) - but seems happy now with artist Van Hunt.

CINDY CRAWFORD

Plunging dresses are de rigueur in Hollywood these days, but back in the 90s they were not.

In 1991, model Cindy Crawford wore a fire engine red dress from Versace that got plenty of double takes. Her date was husband Richard Gere whom she was wed to from 1991 until 1995.

Cynthia Ann Crawford, known as Cindy Crawford, is an American model, actress and television personality.

The cover girl now has two kids with husband Rande Gerber - they are Kaia and Presley.

The star was in the documentary last year titled The Supermodels with pals Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.

ANGELINA JOLIE

In 2012, Angelina Jolie showed up at the Oscars in a revealing black velvet Atelier Versace gown.

She stuck out one of her toned legs to added some sexy appeal as she put her arm around Brad Pitt whom she is now divorced from.

Jolie was mocked for the strange pose and some trolls likened her leg to a coffee table leg.

But it was a daring move that has since been copied by many.

Jolie is an Oscar winning actress who took home the statuette for Girl, Interrupted in year 2000.

In 2009 she was nominated for The Changeling. In 2013, she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

In her next big movie she plays Greek soprano opera singer Maria Callas who romanced Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis. The challenging role will likely win her another Oscar nomination.
