Fans were left wondering why Ryan Gosling walked the red carpet without his wife Eva Mendes by his side at the Oscars in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
The Hollywood star, 43, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Barbie, posed on the red carpet with his sister Mandi instead at The Dolby Theatre.
Eva's Instagram followers were then surprised to see the actress, 50, was at the Oscars but had decided to skip the red carpet and head backstage.
Rocking a baseball cap and a double denim outfit, Eva's look was a far cry from the custom couture gowns seen at event.
Eva previously spoke about the reason why she doesn't do red carpet events with Ryan when she posted footage from 2011's Place Beyond The Pines.

A fan commented: 'Eva, I want to be honest w u, but I hope Barbie will get through the Awards Season just to see you w Ryan. I know I’m selfish and probably a dreamer, but I will never stop to dream about it!!' (sic).
To which she responded: 'You’re the best! What a cool comment; thank you. But we don’t do those things together...Like these photos I’ve been posting, I’m only comfortable posting because it’s already out there.'
She added: 'Oh wait - for those who may catch me in a 'lie' - we only were on the red carpet together once when promoting this film.'
The actress shared a clip on Instagram showing her as she posed outside of Ryan's, dressing room.
'Always by my man,' the mom-of-two — who has been in a relationship with Gosling since they met on the set of their 2012 movie The Place Beyond the Pines — captioned the clip.
Ryan later took the stage for an epic performance of 'I'm just Ken' sporting a hot pink bedazzled suit. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but lost out to Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer.)
Eva also shared a snap of herself to her Instagram Stories, writing in Spanish, 'Siempre con mi hombre' which means 'Always by my man.'

After Ryan lost the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, Eva took to Instagram again, as she shared a photo of her in the same pink jacket Ryan wore onstage during his musical performance.
'You took Ken all the way to the Oscar's, RG,' she wrote, playfully adding, 'Now come home, we need to put the kids to bed.'

He began his statement by expressing gratitude for his nomination, stating: 'I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films.'
'And I never thought I'd being saying this, but I'm also incredibly honored and proud that it's for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.'
The actor then went on to share his disappointment at Margot and Greta not being nominated, before praising them for their work on the film.
'Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history,' he added.
Lastly, he congratulated co-star America Ferrera, who received the Best Supporting Actress nod.
'Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film,' Ryan said.
Barbie was released in July and raked in a record-breaking $1.45 billion at the global box office, and $636 million domestically.
