Oscar fans are convinced Al Pacino's Best Picture announcement for Oppenheimer contained a hidden dig at another blockbuster hit nominated for the award.
The legendary Godfather actor left audiences stunned when he announced the coveted Best Picture winner without bothering to name any of the nominees.
Announcing the biggest award of the night, Al Pacino said: 'Ten wonderful films are nominated, but only one will take the award for Best Picture. And I have to go to the envelope for that. And I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer, yes!'
While cheers echoed throughout the venue for the Christopher Nolan film, many viewers have begun concocting their own wild theories on the less than conventional announcement.
Based on a joke from the hit film, which saw many Ken's easily distracted by the Godfather film, Barbie fans believed the Academy choosing Al Pacino to present the film's rival with the illustrious award was a swipe at the feminist movie.
Oscars fans are convinced Al Pacino's bizarre Best Picture announcement for Oppenheimer has a hidden meaning after he failed to read out the list of nominees
Based on a joke from Barbie, which saw many Ken's easily distracted by the Godfather film, fans believed the Academy choosing Al Pacino to present the film's rival with the award was a swipe at the feminist movie
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), many shared their many theories behind Al Pacino presenting the award in the manner that he did.
'My wife Claire’s Oscar take: after the Barbie scene mocking Ken’s love of The Godfather, it’s hard not to see the Academy’s choice of Al Pacino to present Oppenheimer with best picture as anything other than a MIDDLE FINGER to Barbie.'
'The Academy bringing Al Pacino, from The Godfather, to deliver the Best Picture #Oscar to Oppenheimer instead of Barbie, a movie that mocked Kens’ obsession with The Godfather, is CRAZY.'
'I’m actually mad Barbie didn’t win best picture now even though I was [rooting] for Poor Things because can you imagine the absolute hilarity of Al Pacino presenting that after The Godfather joke in the movie, I mean come on??'
Others were convinced, the actor was attempting to avoid a similar mishap as Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, who notoriously and incorrectly announced La La Land as Best Picture winner in 2018.
'I happen to think that Al Pacino played the smart game with how he presented Best Picture at the Oscars.
'He made sure he couldn't fall victim to any envelope mishaps like Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty.'
'I’m obsessed with the way Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as Best Picture. couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing lol.'
Many took to X to give their own thoughts on Al Pacino's presenting style, with one person saying: 'It was awful that all 10 nominated films weren't honoured one more time'
'Al Pacino had no time to waste - straight to the point.'
'I was screaming at the television.'
'It was very weird and funny indeed. I didn't know what he was announcing.'
However, not everybody was happy with Al Pacino's presenting style with some feeling he had 'ruined' the build up.
'It was awful that all 10 nominated films weren't honoured one more time just for being nominated.'
'Literally that random producer of La La Land did a better job announcing Best Picture.'
