Lily Gladstone was pulled in for a hug and consoled by Martin Scorsese after she lost out on an Oscar win to Emma Stone

The 37-year-old Killers of the Flower Moon star's Best Actress nomination for her role in the hit Western film, which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, at this year's Academy Awards made her the first ever Native woman of American descent to be nominated in this category.

And while many fans were rooting for Lily to take home the award and make history in the same night, she ended up leaving empty-handed after Emma, 35, claimed the lead actress honor for her part in Poor Things.

Following her disappointing loss, Martin, 81, who directed Killers of the Flower Moon, was quick to comfort his leading lady by giving her a big hug.

In the video, Martin and Lily can be seen having a long chat. At the end of their conversation, the iconic director embraced Lily - seemingly reminding her to keep her head high following her loss.

Movie fanatics took the comments section to share their opinion on the 37-year-old's loss.

Many people noted that the actress 'widened the door for more Native American actresses', while others said that the star was 'recognized by her acting peers as the most important work by a woman in 2023.'

One person said: 'I really thought Lily had it, she will get that Oscar eventually, such a talent.'

Another user added: 'My wife and I were pulling for Lily Gladstone. Not talking anything away from Emma Stone who is a wonderful actress. It is a shame Ms. Gladstone didn’t win.'

Some fans noted that they didn't think the director was comforting her, but rather congratulating her for her outstanding performance.

Someone else added: 'I don’t think he’s consoling her. It’s America we know the odds are against us her win was getting here. Widening the door for more native actresses.'

Lily made a stunning appearance on the Oscars red carpet last night.

She wowed in a midnight blue strapless gown with a flowing train. The dress featured a lavender trim and white floral detail across the skirt.

She wore her raven locks in soft waves and sported smoky eye make-up and a berry lipstick.

Lily was the first Native American nominated for best actress, for her performance in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon - and was the favorite in the category thanks to her wins at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

Despite being hotly tipped to win, Emma ended up taking home the award for her role in Poor Things.

The actress jokingly revealed she'd suffered a wardrobe malfunction on stage while accepting the Oscar for best actress for Poor Things at the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

As she prepared to accept the trophy, the 35-year-old Cruella star could be seen holding the back of her Louis Vuitton peplum dress, after her zipper busted down her back - following her shock win over Killers of the Flower Moon favorite.

'My dress is broken,' she began while fighting through tears. 'I think it happened during I'm Just Ken.'

Oppenheimer won a whopping seven Oscars, while rival Barbie only scooped one.

The historical epic directed by Christopher Nolan swept the major categories with wins for Best Actor Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jr. and Nolan - with the film also winning Best Picture.

In contrast, Barbie, who memorably won against Oppenheimer in the 'Barbenheimer' box office showdown over the summer, walked away with just one award for Best Original Song for What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and Finneas McConnell.
