EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Why Donald Trump being re-elected could cause problems for Prince Harry

With campaigners one step nearer to viewing Prince Harry's US visa application, his disclosure that he had considered US citizenship might turn out to be wishful thinking.

While recalling his past drug-addled state at length in his book Spare, where he described conversations with a loo seat and a grinning bin, it has not yet been confirmed if he admitted any dalliances with drugs in his visa application, although he has said he was 'truthful'.

If he did, it could be construed as 'moral turpitude' in the eyes of Uncle Sam and he would need special clearance, with the White House becoming involved.

Donald Trump, who stands a good chance of re-election as president, is no Sussex fan, and has said of Harry: 'He would be on his own, if it was down to me.'

Should Trump triumph in November, Harry might find himself persona non grata and in urgent need of his dad's sofa.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Prince Harry admitted any dalliances with drugs in his visa application, which if true could be seen as 'moral turpitude' and therefore require special clearance from the President

Recalling his first day as a BBC reporter in 1970, John Simpson, under orders to ask Harold Wilson about rumours of a general election, approached the Labour PM at a Euston station photocall.

'I only got as far as, 'Excuse me, Prime Minister' when he exploded and punched me in the stomach with his right hand and with his left hand tried to break my microphone.' Contrast Bruiser Wilson with our PM – the serene, shin-exposing and fasting Rishi!

Before England's crushing cricket defeat to India, the team went to see the Dalai Lama at the Himalayan Namgyal Monastery where he lives in exile.

It has become customary for overseas sides playing at Dharamsala to visit the Dalai Lama and receive his blessing. Those that do usually go on to lose the match. Has India discovered a devastating new twelfth man?

Cillian Murphy's Best Actor Oscar win – a first for an Irishman – is in contrast to twice-nominated fellow countryman and rugby-mad Richard Harris.

Highlighting his support for the Munster team, Richard, who died in 2002, once declared: 'I will never win an Oscar now, but even if I did I would swap it instantly for one sip of champagne from the Heineken Cup.'

Showbiz chums Ant and Dec appeared on video to wish Cat Deeley luck on her This Morning debut.

'She might be all sweetness and light, but that girl could party,' gushed Ant, before Dec cheekily added: 'Keep the lock on the drinks cabinet.' A tad awkward, surely? Thirsty Ant's problems with the bottle are well documented.

Tristram Powell, who has died aged 83, recalls Alan Bennett chewing his handkerchief with tension at the back of the BBC studio as Tristram directed his Talking Heads series.

'During the filming of Nights In The Gardens Of Spain with Penelope Wilton,' remembered Tristram, 'Alan swallowed his handkerchief whole.'
