Elon Musk turned down a request from Donald Trump to buy Truth Social last summer, according to sources cited by The Washington Post today.
At the time, Truth Social's parent company, Trump Media, was in the middle of a complicated and long-delayed merger process.
The Post's unnamed sources say Trump told Musk he had earned just $200 from the venture.
Musk ultimately turned down the request for Trump's renegade social media site, the sources said.
The Washington Post cites unnamed sources who say Trump asked Musk to buy Truth Social last year after struggling to turn a profit
Just a few months after the disclosure, Trump Media's merger partner, Digital World Acquisition Corp., said that it had offered to pay an $18million settlement to the Securities and Exchange Commission if the merger was completed.
The SEC alleged that DWA had misled investors, which put the merger in a precarious position.
But the SEC has since given permission for DWA to register a merger, which could allow Trump Media to eventually go public.
When reached by the Post about the Truth Social claims, Musk said only that he had 'never been to Mar-a-Lago'.
A Trump Media spokesman refused to confirm or deny the claims, instead telling the newspaper quippingly: 'We heard Trump and Musk were actually discussing buying the Washington Post but they decided it had no value.'
Trump has long railed against the Post, which is owned by Jeff Bezos.
Musk previously looked down on Truth Social, tweeting in 2022 that the platform had a 'terrible name', and that it was 'time for Trump to hand up his hat and sail into the sunset.'
Trump did not take kindly to the slight, posting a photo of the two men in the Oval Office shortly with a caption that claimed Musk would be 'worthless' without government support of his projects.
'I could have said "drop to your knees and beg," and he would have done it', he bragged.
But the Tesla CEO has increasingly been supportive of the conservative ideology that Trump espouses.
He echoed Trump's unverified claims that Joe Biden is 'importing voters and creating a national security threat from unvetted illegal immigrants.'
Since being kicked off Twitter by Musk's predecessors, Trump has used Truth Social to communicate with his army of supporters.
He said nothing of the Musk claims this morning, instead railing against Joe Biden.
