A dad has sparked fierce debate after sharing his unusual hack for making his 11-year old daughter tidy her room.

The unnamed father, from Syracuse, New York, took to Reddit's Made Me Smile thread with a post titled: 'A letter to my messy daughter from the tooth fairy.'

The light-hearted note, sent from the headquarters in 'Fairyland,' started off with an apology for the delay in retrieving the little girl's teeth.

It went on to reveal there had already been two failed attempts at retrieval because the tooth fairies encountered 'tragedy' due to the youngster's messiness.

The light-hearted note, sent from the headquarters in 'Fairyland,' started off with an apology for the delay in retrieving the little girl's teeth

The note read: 'As you are getting older and older, you have fewer and fewer baby teeth to lose, so I am sure each one is important to you.

'Now, with that said, I must be frank. The state of your room prevented us from performing a midnight retrieval.'

It continued: 'The first attempt almost resulted in tragedy as one of our agent's shoes got stuck to something icky on the floor.

'While attempting to free herself, a pile of socks tipped over and nearly suffocated her. All the commotion alerted a large yellow dog and our agent had to abort the mission.

'Attempt number two went even worse than that, with our agent tripping upon entry and spraining her left dorsal wing.

'Luckily the large yellow dog was snoring and did not hear the fall.'

The dad's cheeky note went on to mention that due to the events that occurred, the tooth fairies were 'forced to perform a very rare daytime retrieval,' which turned out to be a success but is 'not desired.'

'Since it is the nature of tooth fairies to operate at night (moonlight sustains us), diurnal (daytime) tooth fairies are a grumpy sort and protest to most tasks,' it continued.

'Even those tasks that they are literally named after. Your diurnal tooth fairy was Greta, and due to performing a midday retrieval, opted to pay your fee in change.'

The note concluded: 'We do hope this exchange can be performed in the usual manner the next time you have teeth to get rid of.

'We also know that you have a choice when it comes to tooth disposal and we appreciate the opportunity to meet this need.'

The father has since spoken to Newsweek about his motivations: 'While I believe tidiness is important in general, I recognize that my wife and I aren't tidy people.

'I try to be honest with my kids about my own shortcomings, and tell them not to be messy like me. I hope that, if they learn good habits early, it will help them later on.'

He continued: 'We had forgotten to play the part of the tooth fairy and, when she woke up in the morning, she was disappointed.

'Since we had been trying to get her to clean her room for a long time, it provided an opportunity to learn a light-hearted lesson.

'A lot of people have asked, and the answer is no, the note did not have any lasting cleanliness effects.'

The Reddit post soon gained traction and was flooded with mixed comments from readers.

On the one hand, there were those who were fans of the note.

One person wrote: 'Who knew the tooth fairy had that good of a PR team.'

A second person commented: '"We know you have a choice in tooth disposal..." Omg, I cannot stop laughing. This is brilliant.'

Another person added: 'This is fantastic!! I have a messy kid who I straight up forgot to get the last tooth from. She had to remind me to remind the tooth fairy…. Going to use my own version of this with the next one, thank you for the idea!'

Someone else said: 'What a clever way to encourage your daughter to keep her room clean. Make sure you thank the tooth fairies for their cooperation.'

And another simply shared: 'A+ parenting right here.'

But, on the other hand, there were others who were not a fan of the letter.

One person wrote: 'Interesting way to try to manipulate and lie to your children to get them to do what you want.'

A second person wrote: 'I'm of the radical opinion that not everything needs to be a transaction or a life lesson. Let your daughter have something special without adding shame and guilt to the mix.'

A third person added: 'This gives me so much manipulation ick.'

'So now we are enlisting the tooth fairy to parent your children? First Santa to keep them good all year and now the tooth fairy to keep a clean room,' one person wrote.

Another shared: 'Be a parent and teach your child how to keep a clean organized room.'

One person commented: 'Sorry, but this didn't make me smile and I found it to be kinda gross.'

'Nothing like shaming your child into cleaning her room. There have to be better way to do that then this,' another person commented.
