President Joe Biden continues his post State of the Union road show on Wednesday to two swing states critical to his re-election: Wisconsin and Michigan

The trip comes as Biden and Donald Trump both officially won enough delegates to have their party's respective presidential nominations.

Both states will be critical in the 2024 presidential contest. Trump won them in the 2016 election but Biden put them back in the Democratic column in the 202 contest.

Currently, Trump leads by one point in Wisconsin, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, and by four points in Michigan

While in Wisconsin, Biden will open his state campaign headquarters in Milwaukee, where nearly 40% of residents are black, rather than in the state capitol of Madison.

Milwaukee also has a high level of Hispanic voters and suburban independent voters - a group that can decide elections.

Biden will also announce $3.3 billion in infrastructure projects for disadvantaged communities, specifically black, Hispanic and Asian neighborhoods. Biden needs all three voting blocs if he wants to defeat Trump and win a second term.

Biden and his team - including Vice President Kamala Harris and first lady Jill Biden - have made several trips to Wisconsin. Trump, the Republican nominee, has yet to visit the state this cycle.

In Michigan on Thursday, Biden will visit Saginaw, north of Detroit, which has high concentrations of black and union voters.

The president and his advisers have made several trips to the state amid criticism of Biden's handling of the war in Gaza. Michigan is home to the largest Arab American population in the nation.

But Biden won't be in Dearborn, which has a high concentration of Palestinian voters, on Thursday, instead being further north.

Biden has another goal in the state: wooing his own Democrats. During the primary in that state, 13% voted 'uncommitted' instead of for the president.

Both Trump and Biden are making a play for black voters this year as polls show the voting bloc is increasingly disappointed in Biden.

A New York Times/Sienna poll last month showed 23% of black voters support Trump, which is a massive increase from 2020 when his support with that group was at 4%.

This week's trip is part of Biden's post-State of the Union tour to visit all the battleground states in the month of March. Last week he was in Pennsylvania and Georgia. On Monday he was in New Hampshire. Future trips will include North Carolina.

Biden won Wisconsin by less than 1 percent in the 2020 presidential election and Michigan by three points. Trump won both those states over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 contest.
