Despite what your mom says, she may well have a favourite, according to a new study.

A recent poll of 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom found that 23 percent of mothers admitted that they had a favourite.

In addition, 24 percent of men surveyed by the company OnePoll claimed that they were their mothers favorite, compared with 17 percent of women.

Around a quarter of mothers have admitted to having a favorite child, according to a new poll of 2,000 parents.

Around a quarter of mothers have admitted to having a favorite child, according to a new poll of 2,000 parents.

This seems to hold true across countries. Some 40 percent of Americans who grew up with siblings believed that their parents had a favourite child, according to research conducted by the Institute for Family Studies.

And amid these findings, psychologists have revealed the subtle signs that the special sibling might be you.

'Often a mom’s favorite will be a child with similarities in personality to their own – sometimes even the child who most reminds them of their younger self,' UK-based behavioral psychologist Jo Hemmings told StudyFinds

But there are other signs too, she adds. These include if your mom or dad consistently picks your name or birthday for her passwords, and if it's mostly your pictures that adorn her office or home.

Also, you should pay attention to who gets the most effort put in to their birthday.

Then there are the less tangible things that you might have to work harder to identify. This include looking out for subtle signs of who your mom or dad favors, for example who they choose to sit next to at dinner, and who they talk about most often.

Hemmings said that flowers are a surefire way to win your mother over this mothers day. 'Flowers positively stimulate three of our most powerful senses – smell, touch, and sight, which, when combined bring us endless amounts of joy.'

But you might not even be the best judge of where you stand in comparison to your siblings.

Scientists from Purdue identified that children are wrong about 60 percent of the time when guessing if they are their mother's favorite.
